Job Statement

The job of the Paraeducator/Special Education Paraeducator is to assist the certificated staff member in the implementation of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and instructional program in both general education and special education classrooms.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent per WAC 179-03-022
Associates of Arts Degree or transcript showing at least 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits at an institution of higher education or ETS ParaPro Assessment score report of 461 or higher.
Job related experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to work with and supervise students, including students with special needs and individuals who are escalated
Ability to physically restrain aggressive students
Ability to perform satisfactorily the required functions of the job including the ability to communicate effectively (oral and written)
Knowledge of working with students with special needs
Ability to work independently or as part of a team
Ability to work with and supervise students
Ability work cooperatively with staff members
Ability to accept responsibility and take direction
Word processing

Working Conditions:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

Work directly with students to carry out the instructional and IEP program set up by the certificated staff member
Prepare specified materials or equipment for use in program and classroom
Report learning or other difficulties encountered by students to the certificated staff member
Prepare teaching aids as directed by the certificated staff member
Operate instructional equipment
Prepare materials, both academic and non-academic to be used within the classroom
Implement with specified students/groups, programs as planned for math, written language, reading and behavior
Monitor students both in and out of the classroom
Tutor students on a one-to-one basis
Collect and record student data and work
Maintain confidentially in relationship to the school, program, staff, and students
This job position will also be assisting with cooking
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds

Terms of Employment

Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent per WAC 179-03-022
Associates of Arts Degree or transcript showing at least 72 quarter credits/48 semester credits at an institution of higher education or ETS ParaPro Assessment score report of 461 or higher
Successful completion of Fundamental Course of Study within 1 year of hire date
Criminal history clearance/fingerprinting (Must be completed during the application process)

Performance of this job will be evaluated at least once annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of employees
