The Assistant Superintendent, High Schools & College and Career Readiness serves as a key instructional leader within SFUSD, reporting to the Deputy Superintendent of Education Services and contributing to the District’s Senior Leadership Team. This role provides strategic leadership across high schools and College and Career Readiness, ensuring alignment, coherence, and equity in teaching, learning, and leadership development from early education through elementary grades.

Essential Duties

As the Assistant Superintendent, you will:

● Lead High Schools and the College and Career Division in alignment with the SFUSD mission and realizing the vision of the Graduate Profile

● Supervise a cohort of Executive Directors and greater LEAD team to actively support school and college and career operations

● Provide visible district level leadership, support and guidance across all departments in service of the Board Adopted Vision, Values, Goals and Guardrails, specifically Goal 3

● Champion and model anti-racist leadership rooted in equity, the belief that all students can learn, and the understanding that we must interrupt inequities to ensure that each and every student receives the quality instruction and equitable support required to thrive in the 21st century

● Provide visible district leadership across high schools serving as a problem solver and bridge builder to unify central office teams and school site leadership in service of supporting effective school operations

● Partner with city agencies and community organizations to strengthen systems and access to college and career opportunities

● Support implementation of curricular initiatives

● Collaborate with Executive Directors and centralized district departments to develop, implement, regularly evaluate, improve, and redesign instructional programs toward increasing student achievement at under-performing schools and closing the achievement and equity gap at all schools

● Build a learning, equity, and performance-focused high school LEAD team of Executive Directors that regularly engages in authentic collaborative learning to improve their own leadership capacity and success

● Use data systems and multiple measures to monitor progress, inform decision-making, and refine strategies to improve outcomes, particularly for historically underserved students

● Lead the development of a high-performing LEAD team that engages in continuous improvement, shared learning, and accountability for results

● Work collaboratively with Executive Directors to ensure that school leaders have strong talent strategies in place designed to help recruit, develop and retain high quality, diverse staff that positively impact student outcomes

● Strategically build a strong, cohesive, and collaborative team among Site Leaders and the HS LEAD team to ensure shared decision-making, commitment, and implementation of priorities and to model healthy and productive adult culture

● Develop and implement a comprehensive, equity-driven talent strategy, including supervision, evaluation, and ongoing development of direct reports

● Build strong instructional leadership systems, including coaching, professional learning, and leadership development structures that support continuous growth

● Foster a cohesive and collaborative leadership culture grounded in shared accountability, clear priorities, and effective decision-making

● Model and cultivate a healthy adult learning environment that reflects trust, inclusion, and high expectations across teams

● Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent team (LEAD) and other district leaders to ensure alignment, coherence, and support for schools

● Fulfill the role of emergency response for schools adhering to all district protocols

● Be the point of contact for all high level parent, student, and staff concerns and collaborate with the Human Resources department and Legal division when necessary

● Navigate and partner with central offices to resolve complex school site issues, including student discipline, personnel, budget, curriculum, and operations

● Engage families, community partners, and early learning stakeholders to elevate student and family voice in decision-making and strengthen trust across communities

● Represent the district in public and professional settings, effectively communicating priorities, progress, and challenges to diverse audiences including briefing and providing regular reports and presentations to our Board of Education

The strongest candidates will have:

● Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile

● Experience with effective principal supervision at the secondary level

● Three (3) years of being a high school principal

● Knowledge of college and career readiness initiatives that promote access for all students especially those from underserved communities

● Three (3) years of senior-level administrative experience in a secondary setting, preferably in a public, urban school district central office department

● A demonstrated capacity to interrupt systemic barriers to equity and to model equity-centered Leadership.

● Well-developed cultural humility, awareness of their own identity, and understanding of internalized, interpersonal, and systemic racism and other forms of oppression

● A strong record of managing organizational change and initiating key innovations

● Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists

● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues

● Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos)

● Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters

Minimum Qualifications

● Valid California Administrative Credential

● Five (5) years of experience as a central office and/or site administrator

● Three (3) years experience at the secondary level in the school or college and career field

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $200,163 - $248,112/annually commensurate with experience in a similar position. This position is a one-year contract which may be renewed on an annual basis.
