Characteristics of Class

Under supervision of administrator, employee to provide specialized physical health care procedures to Special Education and Section 504 eligible students; to maintain records and documents related to the provision of physical health care procedures. Each S10F will be provided defense and indemnification by SFUSD for any and all civil/criminal liability that could arise in connection with the specialized health care procedure performed by the S10F.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Specialized physical health care procedures will be performed under the direct or indirect supervision of a credentialed school district nurse, after completion of a training module designed within the parameters of the California School Nurse Organization’s Green Book: Guidelines for Specialized Physical Healthcare Services in School Settings, 2nd Edition, 2011. Physical health care procedures can only be executed after demonstrating competency performing the procedures. A skill-based demonstration of competency will be required yearly.

Example Duties:

Assists in planning lessons and preparing instructional materials for severely impaired pupils.
Working in accordance with an individualized education program (IEP), supervises and/or tutors individuals or small groups of pupils in specific skill and/or content areas. Conducts planned lessons with assigned groups in the classroom or other assigned educational location.
Assists in explanation of subject matter. Administers tests and examinations, reviews, corrects and reviews assignments, and maintains individual pupil profiles. Assists in evaluating pupils.
Prepares and maintains records and lists not required by law to be so maintained by certificated personnel.
Prepares, operates, and maintains instructional equipment and supplies such as audio-visual equipment, computers, laboratory equipment, and other teaching machines. May also procure and store such equipment. Issues various supplies and equipment to pupils, and maintains necessary records pertaining to instructional equipment and supplies.
Assists in maintaining classroom discipline in order to provide a positive learning environment. Enforces classroom and school rules. Assists in behavior management and discipline among pupils on field trips and at school site activities.
May assist other designated school staff in monitoring halls, locker areas, cafeteria, yard, auditorium, gymnasium, lavatories, and other areas of the site in accordance with program regulations.
Renders first aid in compliance with modern precautionary methods. Reports disciplinary problems and injury incidents to the proper supervisor.
May assist the professional staff in publicizing educational development programs by issuing information, objectives, and functions of the program.
Assist with pupils’ personal needs such as lifting, toileting, feeding, diapering and positioning if required.
Record and document physical health care procedures performed on a daily basis
Perform related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

In addition to the knowledge, abilities, and skills of the S10 All Impairments, the S10F Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures will be able to take direction from a certified school district nurse, able to demonstrate competency in performing at least one of the above procedures, able to accurately record and document physical health care procedure performed on a daily basis, able to understand the needs SPED and 504 students with medical conditions and effectively respond to their needs, able to maintain and monitor designated equipment and supplies needed for physical health care procedures in a sanitary and effective manner, (ex of supplies: gastrostomy tubes, feeding syringes, G-tube formula, glucometers, glucose monitoring strips, nebulizers, spacers) able to respond to emergency situations in accordance with First Aid/CPR training and individual students’ emergency care plans.

Minimum Qualifications

An Associates Degree or higher OR 48 college units and a High School Diploma OR passing of CBEST and a high school diploma OR passing of the instructional aide exam and high school diploma
Successful completion of Community First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training every two (2) years (funded through district)
Successful annual completion of one (1) or more training modules of the following physical health care procedures:
Gastrostomy tube feeding without medication
Blood glucose testing using student’s glucometer
Administration of asthma medication via nebulizer and/or spacer
Completion of at least one training module for physical health care needs such as routine mouth suctioning, catheterization, routine oxygen, G-tube pump.
