Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the T10-Security Campus, examples of duties include:

As directed, patrols the building and grounds of a school to maintain order and prevent the entry of unauthorized persons; acts to prevent injury to persons; screens individuals and groups entering school property to ascertain the nature of their business; refuses entrance to unauthorized persons.
Enforces Board of Education rules and regulations and municipal and state ordinances and laws as they relate to behavior on school property; assists the Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in coordinating security, protective and investigative efforts; as directed by safety and security coordinator, director, or site administrator uses initiative in analyzing situations and takes appropriate action, often requiring prompt decisions.
Apprehends persons engaged in acts of assault, vandalism, theft or other illegal conduct; as specifically directed by the site administrator; investigates bodily assaults, accidents, property damage, fire reports and alarms, law violations, disturbances of peace and other incidents; gathers evidence for use by school administrators and/or law enforcement personnel; may appear as a witness in court or a disciplinary hearing.
Assists in the control of crowds or other assemblies; takes charge at the scene of disturbances, accidents or emergencies; as required, notifies district emergency services coordinator, school administration, designated school site emergency coordinator, emergency ambulance, fire department and law enforcement agencies.
Gives information to students, faculty, the general public and others; locates persons on property; gives emergency aid to sick or injured persons; directs authorized visitors to proper location.
Checks the security of school buildings and grounds; reports hazardous conditions, unusual circumstances and malfunctions of the buildings and equipment; reports on theft, vandalism and other damage to property.
Uses a cellular phone, computer, and a two-way radio, as assigned, oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance; stand or sit for extended periods of time; walk or run over uneven surfaces; climb stairs; see to monitor student behavior and assigned campus areas; and hear and speak to exchange information.

Characteristics of Class

Under the direction of the Safety and Security supervisor, Code 2, and/or general supervision of a school district administrator, patrols buildings, grounds and adjacent areas of a school; maintains order; prevents the entry of unauthorized persons; enforces applicable sections of the Education Code, the Penal Code, the District’s Student Conduct Code and individual school rules; assists in the maintenance of an orderly and safe campus; assists administrative and staff personnel in maintaining orderly conduct; protects school department property against damage by vandalism and theft; notifies the school principal of situations that may result in disturbances in schools; as directed, cooperates with law enforcement agencies; prepares reports and memoranda; and performs related duties as required; oversees and monitor the behavior of students who are outside of class and at school sponsored activities both on and off campus.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Requires responsibility for : Carrying out, explaining and enforcing Board of Education rules and regulations and statutory laws and ordinances; uses initiative in dealing with students and others to maintain orderly behavior and safeguard persons and property; makes regular contact with administrators, faculty, students, the general public and law enforcement personnel; prepares reports of work performed including incident reports and conditions observed. Nature of duties requires considerable walking and standing and involves exposure to risks inherent in security work.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Knowledge of: Board of Education rules and regulations, state and municipal laws and ordinances; health and safety regulations; basic methods of individual and group supervision; understanding problems of urban youth and human relations; basic record-keeping techniques; operation of a two-way radio, cellular telephone; and other communication equipment as, required.

Ability to: Take initiative and accept responsibility without close supervision; learn District organization, operations, policies and objectives; assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations and enforce USD rules and regulations and city and state ordinances and laws; learn, interpret, apply and explain laws, rules and regulations; observe situations and accurately determine an effective course of action; think and act quickly, tactfully, and maturely in emergencies; communicate courteously, fairly, and convincingly with students, faculty, groups, organization representatives and the general public; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; follow oral and written instructions; prepare accurate, clear and concise oral and written reports; patrol and monitor an assigned campus to maintain order and security; observe health and safety regulations; maintain routine records; understand and follow

Skill: Excellent oral and communication skills to establish and maintain effective community relations with culturally diverse school and neighborhood groups.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires completion of high school supplemented by two years of full-time paid work experience. Enrollment or completion of a recognized two-year program in police science or police administration is desirable; or an equivalent combination of training and experience
If employed more than twenty hours each week, must successfully complete BSIS training which includes twenty-fours of curriculum developed by BSIS and POST in order to comply with provision of SB1626, as a condition of initial and continuing employment
Possession of a valid Driver’s license
