Candidate will be responsible for providing professional development on research-validated health and wellness curricula and delivering classroom health education presentations to support student well-being. This role includes serving as a liaison between After School Program staff and regular day staff to strengthen communication and coordination of services. A strong commitment to equity is essential, with a focus on meeting the needs of all students, particularly those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning (LGBTQ+). The candidate will actively participate in the School Climate Committee within the School Health Programs Department and serve on the Crisis Response Team, working with school site staff to review and implement emergency procedures. Additionally, the role involves assisting with on-site medical emergencies and supporting schools in responding to crises, hazards, and other urgent situations as needed.

Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.

As the School Climate / Student Support Coordinator (R35), you will:

Assist site in creating/streamlining and clarifying for all staff the site’s referral/intake process, mechanisms of linking to support services and follow-up with students/families.
Provide Outreach to and inform parents/caregivers of school health and wellness related events via newsletters and bulletins (including health awareness topics).
Conduct workshops for parents/caregivers on health and wellness related topics
Collaborate with the Office of Parent Relations to build relationships with parents and create school/parent partnerships to increase parent involvement with school sites
Conduct workshops for parents regarding health topics and school climate improvement issues.
Coordinate and provide technical assistance for middle school LGBTQ Support Liaisons to facilitate Ally club or other appropriate student diversity groups
Coordinate and provide technical assistance for middle school Healthy School Team in planning and implementing health awareness events
Coordinate and provide technical assistance for middle school Healthy School Team and Health Advocates related to and regarding: Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), Component IV School Climate of the Site Academic Plan, Student Assistance Program (SAP)/Student Success Team (SST), and Student Attendance Review Team (SART).
Assist school sites with referral process to community-based organizations (CBO).
Provide support/resources to sites to facilitate educational student support groups
Provide support/resources for HST to present workshops for staff on topics including:
- classroom management, sexual harassment, bullying, school climate improvement, and alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention.
Assist evaluators in encouraging site staff to complete surveys as needed and collecting necessary documentation for evaluation reports.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

The candidate must possess a deep understanding of strategies that support the academic, physical, and emotional development of children and youth, with a focus on building school site capacity to address the needs of the whole child. Strong knowledge of asset-building and youth development strategies is essential, along with the ability to apply these approaches in diverse educational settings. The role requires the ability to collaborate effectively with School Resource Officers to address school and community safety issues, including organizing and leading site-based crisis response and school safety teams. Candidates must also demonstrate the skill to assess needs, evaluate available resources, and strategically recruit community-based organizations to provide comprehensive support services—such as classroom presentations, student support groups, faculty professional development, and mental health counseling. This position calls for initiative, strategic thinking, and the ability to coordinate multi-agency efforts in support of student well-being and school climate.

The mission is aligned with SFUSD goals and priorities and evidenced in SHPD goals and objectives, which are implemented under the direction of the Director of School Health Programs Department. The role of the School Climate Coordinator is described below.

As per Ed Code 44065, paraprofessional staff will not perform more than 50% of their job duties consisting of rendering service in directing, coordinating, supervising or administering any portion or all types of functions related to school health programs.
