As the Director, you will supervise the English Language Arts teams, report to the Executive Director of Content Teams, be a part of the Curriculum and Instruction Department and a district leader in San Francisco Unified School District.

Essential Duties

As the Director, you will:

● Embrace the mission, vision and equity statement of the district

● Lead for positive student achievement outcomes

● Study and analyze student performance data as a means for decision making

● Ensure access at the highest level for all students

● Demonstrate an understanding of urban education and knowledge of instructional practices that support underserved student populations

● Set short and long term goals with content team leaders that focus on student outcomes

● Lead audit, evaluation, piloting, acquisition and adoption process of content materials as needed

● Review and respond to feedback on professional development as well as curriculum

● Create systems for managing multiple work streams

● Lead and support the implementation of Humanities, Language and Literacy vision and policy

● Use data to inform decision making on the development of Humanities, Language and Literacy practices for classroom use

● Support the management of Multilingual, English Language Arts, History/Social Studies and Libraries content area teams.

● Develop and coordinate regular staff meetings

● Support the supervision and evaluation of Humanities administrators.

● Provide ongoing feedback to teams and team leaders in a variety of areas

● Manage budgets in collaboration with supervisors and the executive director

● Lead and support professional development for certificated and non-certificated staff

● Lead and support the design and implementation of student programs

● Work collaboratively with other SFUSD departments to support implementation of curricular content

● Connect with site leaders on curriculum implementation, supplemental services, professional development and other instructional resources

● Partner with external vendors and organizations on providing quality services to students and school sites

● Present curricular information and content to the Board of Education, parent/community groups and other venues as appropriate

The strongest candidates will have:

● Strong knowledge of standards, instructional shifts and curriculum in PreK-12 Humanities

● Experience as a teacher and/or coach in at least two of the content areas (Multilingual Pathways/Programs, Designated ELD, ELA, History/Social Studies, Libraries)

● Experience as a teacher and/or principal at both the elementary and secondary levels

● Experience in policy design, development and/or implementation

● Strong knowledge in instructional pedagogy and best practices in teaching and learning

● Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholder groups

● Success leading effective teams and individuals

● Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings)

● Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile

● A strong record of managing organizational change and initiating key innovations

● Strong analytics and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists

● Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization

● A proven record of effectively planning, organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals

● The ability to learn quickly and adapt as needed in a fast-paced environment

● Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail

● A flexible, “can do” work ethic with a focus on identifying challenges and proactively working to find solutions while maintaining a bigger picture lens and focus on what can be delivered instead of what cannot be done

● Excellent data analysis skills and experience synthesizing data to drive action steps

● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues

● Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex, bureaucratic processes to a variety of audiences

● Ability to define and implement effective HR business practices

● Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters

● Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms)

Minimum Qualifications

● Valid California Administrative Credential or eligibility for a California Administrative Credential

● Three (3) years of experience as a Central Office and/or Site Leader

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $134,939-$183,656/annually commensurate with experience in a similar position. This position is a one-year contract which may be renewed on an annual basis.
