Minimum Qualifications

SFUSD requires all teachers to hold or be pursuing a valid California teaching credential and an English Learner or Bilingual Authorization.

Qualifications for Elementary School Physical Education Specialist include the following:

Preliminary, Single Subject, or multiple subjects with supplemental Clear California Teaching Credential
CLAD credential required
Certified in NCLB highly qualified
Outstanding and/or Highly Satisfactory Summary Evaluations
Demonstrates effectiveness in teaching Physical Education, knowledge, and use of Physical Education standards-based curriculum instruction and assessment
Effective skills in communication, organization, and time management
Demonstrates ability to collaborate with teachers and site administrators to advance effective teaching of Physical Education for all students.
Experience in using a broad repertoire of teaching strategies to deliver standards-based curriculum instruction and assessment
Managing and using State, District, and classroom data to monitor individual student learning and plan instruction accordingly
Demonstrates ability to establish and implement a classroom discipline policy to articulate and maintain standards of expected pupil behavior and achieve a functional learning environment in the classroom
Demonstrates ability to develop/obtain and use instructional materials to enhance the verbal and visual instruction of students with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities and cultural backgrounds
Preferred experience in providing professional development to adults

In accordance with the California Standards of the Teaching Profession, teachers work under the supervision of site or central office administrators and in collaboration with their school staff, families, and community. They are responsible for the fulfillment of the essential duties set forth below:

Provide direct instruction to elementary school students at various school sites as assigned by the Physical Education Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
Collaborate with the Physical Education Supervisor, Implementation Specialists, site teachers, and administrators to provide a comprehensive and sequential standards-based Physical Education program to ensure all students have access to the core curriculum.
Rotate between 1 – 5 school sites per week. When the physical education specialist is not at the site, the core teachers will continue instructing lessons from the adopted curriculum units until the physical education specialist rotates back through the school site. Specialists must develop communication tools so that ongoing communication happens between the classroom teacher and Specialist. (i.e., Calendar, e-mails, curriculum mapping, instructional log)
Develop/review new curriculum and training strategies with Elementary physical education specialists, Content Specialists, and Implementation Specialists for approximately 1,600 core elementary teachers.
Support and coach classroom teachers in providing PE instruction in three major initiatives.
Implement a team teaching scope and sequence at assigned school sites focusing on three major initiatives.
Be knowledgeable and prepared to model effective use of differentiated instructional strategies for diverse learners.
Be familiar with and be able to articulate the essential components of compelling reading, writing, and oral development instruction.n
Knowledge of administrating, analyzing, and using physical fitness testing results.
Collaborate with other site leaders (i.e., school administrators, classroom teachers, paras, etc.) to support a conducive learning environment for staff and students.
Contribute to the cultivation of strong and cohesive professional learning communities.
Attend professional development for Elementary School Physical Education Specialists provided by the Physical Education Department and/or Curriculum and Instruction Office.
Develop and deliver student and program assessments at school sites and collaborated with classroom teachers regarding student improvement.
Using the new SFUSD Standards-Based report card, the PE Specialist will learn, model, collaborate, and assist the classroom teachers with assessments for the quarterly PE performance report cards.
PE Specialist will work closely with the Site Coordinator (if applicable) to ensure instructional equipment and supplies are maintained and stored appropriately.
Attend site staff meetings, training, and professional development.
Coordinate, organize, and present Physical Education Professional Developments at school sites based on curriculum, site-specific needs, and/or the three major initiatives.
Be available to meet with principals, teachers, and the PE Site Coordinator regarding physical education instruction and program implementation.
Organize end-of-the-year school site culminating PE event.
Assist with collecting, recording, and assessing documentation on student development as related to the content standards and curriculum.
Be able to implement and teach SDAIE strategies for English Language Learner populations.
Create and maintain a positive classroom environment for all learners.
Use a Blackboard Configuration (BBC) with every class.
Visually post PE information for each school site you teach at (i.e., Bulletin board, a section in the school newsletter, student(s) of the week, etc.)
Instruct six to eight classes daily and return all equipment to the storage area.
Provide instruction/modeling/team teaching/lesson planning during the entire instructional day.
Transitions between classes are not to exceed five minutes.
Classroom teachers must actively participate in instruction and transition into a team teaching model.
Be available as a resource for classroom teachers and administrators on-site and articulate the message correctly.
Provide intake and dismissal supervision similar to that of the classroom teacher.
Other duties as assigned

The length of the work year for all teachers is 184 days of service, except department heads and deans/head counselors have 189 days of service. Principal expectations vary by school site.
