Job Summary:
Assists with the operations, planning and supervision of Portage Transportation Department to provide safe & efficient pupil transportation for both school and extracurricular activities.
Responsibilities:
Maintain the following infrastructure and related network systems:
- Assumes responsibilities of the Transportation Manager in his or her absence and makes decisions as needed to maintain operations
- Oversees the coordinator for the District’s fleet of school buses. Directs drivers in daily changes in routes, gives bus stop and routing instructions based on legal requirements, parental concerns, weather and traffic conditions
- Communicates and problem solves with administrators, staff, students and community relating to pupil transportation services, concerns, procedures and regulations
- Assists with bus route scheduling for regular runs, mid-day runs, special education runs and daily scheduled extra driving. Advises drivers in changes to runs as necessary
- Assists in the selection and training of bus drivers, aides and trainers. Coordinates the pre-employment process
- Ensures all employee licensing, training, medical, drug and alcohol requirements are current. Maintains transportation employee records in compliance with state and federal laws
- Responds to emergencies and assists at the scene of school bus accidents if necessary
- Prepares and submits local and state reports in accordance with regulation s and laws
- Reviews bus stops to assure compliance with local policies and state laws
- Maintains and reconciles departmental accounting and financial records and reports including purchase orders, fuel consumption, and trip invoicing (time and miles)
- Maintains motor vehicle information files
- Assists with pupil and employee management and discipline procedures
- Conducts or attends meetings as required
- Drives a school bus when required
- Receives calls from drivers before and after regular hours regarding route and trip assignments and absences, assigns drivers to cover absences and special circumstances
- Generates payroll for the department and transmits to payroll office. Informs Human Resources of changes to employees' hours and rates of pay
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor or building administrator(s)
- Regular and consistent attendance
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the policies and procedures contained in the Portage Public Schools Employee Handbook

Supervisory responsibilities:
- Assist manager in supervision of all Transportation employees.
- Supervise in the manager's absence. Make necessary decisions as needed.
Education and/or Experience:
- Associates Degree or equivalent in business, accounting or related field
- Demonstrated facility with computer hardware and software
- 3 years’ experience with computerized routing
- 1-3 years school bus driving experience
- 1-2 years supervisory experience (preferred)
Required License s and /or Certificates:
- Current CDL License with all endorsements to drive school bus
- Subject to drug and alcohol testing requirements under Federal Commercial Drivers’ License regulations
