QUALIFICATIONS:

● Hold K-12 Guidance and Counseling (NT) endorsement/valid certificate preferred.

● Knowledge of the Michigan Model for Comprehensive Guidance Counseling Programs.

● Strong leadership and communication skills.

● Ability to develop/sustain positive working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.

● Ability to develop social skills activities to address the various needs of the students.

● Teaching and/or counseling experience.

● Knowledge and understanding of MiTSS and PBIS.

● Computer literate with a proficiency for communication, data collection, interpretation, application and presentations.

● Problem solving/conflict resolution techniques.

● Excellent written and oral communication is a must

● Must work well with At-Risk students

● Familiarity with the special education referral process (Child Study Process), response to intervention (RTI) and intervention practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Assist students with academic, emotional, social or behavioral problems.

● Show concern for the total need of each student (educational, vocational, personal and social), encouraging maximum growth and development.

● Consult with parents/guardians, teachers, support staff, administration and any local agencies which might be of assistance to the students.

● Provide parents/guardians with accurate, comprehensive and relevant information (resources/agencies) in an objective and caring manner.

● Work with staff to enhance understanding of all aspects of the student’s development and its impact on learning.

● Assists parents/guardians in helping students set and achieve goals.

● Aid students in understanding the school environment and what is expected of them.

● Aid students in understanding their strengths and abilities so they may learn more effectively.

● Teach conflict resolution skills.

● Aid students in acquiring an understanding and respect for individual freedoms and rights of self and others.

● Assist students in dealing with a family crisis (ex: separation, divorce, death, neglect and abuse, unemployment and alcoholism).

● Assist with development of students’ self-esteem.

● Conduct regular classroom sessions.

● Provide individual conferences for students experiencing academic difficulty.

● Develop guidance and counseling for gifted and talented students.

● Keep accurate records of all counseling and guidance activities.

● Assist in the evaluation of student services programs, procedures and activities.

● Inform administration of various student’s needs or issues.

● Assists in appropriate student referrals.

● Serve as a Child-Study Team member and attends all Child Study Meetings (solicit parent input prior to the meetings).

● Assist in the development of an individualized education plan for students with exceptional educational needs.

● Participate in home visits upon request.

● Make appropriate referrals to community agencies when necessary.

● Serve as consultant to parents/guardians, staff and administration.

● Participate in parent-teacher conferences.

● Protect the confidentiality of student records and release personal data in accordance with state laws and Board policies.

● Establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with faculty, staff and administration to facilitate the provision of optimum guidance and counseling services.

● Delineate and promote the counselor’s function in meeting the needs of students.

● Assist in the development of: curricular and environmental conditions appropriate for the school and community: educational procedures and programs to meet student needs: and, a systematic evaluation process for guidance and counseling programs, services and personnel.

● Work with the administration on additional activities as necessary.

● Perform other duties as assigned.

SALARY: Based on Teacher Contract and Salary Schedule

REPORTS TO: Dunlap Principal
