Custodial Supervisor

Supervisor: Director of Building & Grounds and Assistant Director of Building & Grounds
Starting Salary Range: $52,000 - $56,000 with 100% paid IMRF and benefits (medical, dental, vision, and life)
Work Year: 12 months; 8 hrs/day scheduled 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. but may vary based on needs/staffing
Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Buildings & Grounds and the Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds, the Custodial Supervisor is responsible for the uninterrupted and comfortable operation of all buildings by ensuring that all standards of cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and security are met.
Qualifications / Experience
- High school graduate or equivalent with the ability to demonstrate written and oral communication, basic mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective interpersonal skills.
- Minimum of three years of experience as a school custodian.
- Proven understanding of proper cleaning techniques and routines.
- Ability to supervise custodial staff.
- Experience in delegating responsibilities to other employees.
- A willingness to work beyond regular hours to ensure that extracurricular activities and school rental requirements are satisfied as well as when emergencies arise
- Ability to develop good, positive relationships with colleagues and community members
- Experience in plant operations and maintenance, cleaning methods and procedures, repairs, security, heating and ventilation preferably with several years of experience in related work.
Responsibilities
- Supervise evening custodial staff and determine workload for all staff
- Oversee the evening cleaning of all buildings and grounds
- Ensure cleanliness and facility readiness for instruction and learning.
- Inspect facilities daily to insure quality control.
- Ensure all facilities are secured nightly.
- Maintain a safe working environment for staff members
- Uses plow truck, salt truck, bobcat, etc., as needed
- Make necessary calls, repairs and monitor power outages
- Report water breaks and running sinks/toilets
- Supervise special events and extra-curricular activities to ensure cleanliness and readiness.
- Monitor the after-hours environment including temperature, ventilation, and building safety
- Monitors organizations renting classrooms and gyms, assuring proper facility maintenance and safety issues
- Represents District 135 when resolving conflicts related to building rentals
- Completes minor repairs as required
- Notifies supervisor when equipment is in need of repair.
- Schedules cleaning projects within the building so as not to interfere with curricular or extracurricular activities
- Conducts preventative maintenance as directed and maintains a log of service rendered on equipment
- Verify accurate and timely submission of time-keeping records for payroll reporting.
- Assign staff accordingly and/or participate in nightly tasks when personnel are absent
- Provide training of personnel to insure employee knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and practices.
- Monitor and evaluate employee progress.
- Maintains daily communication with the Director of Buildings and Grounds when staff replacement or additional help is required and why
- Screens and interview candidates for night custodial positions
- Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems
- Maintain a professional level of confidentiality regarding all district matters.
- Supervise the efficient and proper use of custodial supplies; orders and maintains an inventory of all supplies
- Support the goals and objectives of the district and follow district policies.
- Maintains relationships with principals to better understand building-specific needs
- Keep abreast of innovative practices.
- Be adaptable and flexible in acceptance of changes in techniques and procedures.
- Any other duties deemed appropriate for the position
Physical Abilities and Working Conditions
- Vision: (which may be corrected) to read small print; view a computer screen for prolonged periods.
- Hearing: (which may be corrected) to answer telephones and tolerate exposure to noisy conditions.
- Speech: to be understood in face-to-face communications; to speak with a level of proficiency and volume to be understood over a telephone.
- Upper Body Mobility: use hands and fingers to feel, grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head.
- Lower Body Mobility: to bend at waist; stoop; twist and turn torso.
- Strength: to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects that weigh as much as 50 pounds on a frequent basis, 100 pounds occaisionally.
- Environmental Requirements: encounter constant work interruptions; work cooperatively with others; work independently; work indoors.
- Mental Requirements: read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; business math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copying, comparing, compiling and coordinating information and records.
