Title: Music & Theatre Department Collaborative Pianist - Part-Time

Assignment: School year; Hourly; 5-10 hours per week

Location: Winnetka and/or Northfield Campus

Supervisor: Music & Theatre Department Chair and Coordinator

Starting Rate: $50.00/hour

Position Outcomes:

To assist the teachers in helping students achieve course expectations in their classes. To provide collaborative piano accompaniment for classes, rehearsals and special programs, primarily in the Choral Music courses.

General Responsibilities:

This work involves close interaction with staff and students, with the primary emphasis on the implementation of music and performing arts. This person is the collaborative pianist for all of the Choral Music courses and performances, and assists with Instrumental Music as needed. The individual works under the direction of licensed staff. This person is expected to exercise independent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality and react appropriately in crisis situations, as well as exhibit initiative, creativity and organizational skills. For the 25-26 school year this position would work the entire school year with Northfield Chorus on Green and Anchor Days. Additionally, this position would work with Trevian Glee Club on Blue and Anchor Days for approximately 4 weeks leading up to performances.

Qualifications:

College-level courses in piano; bachelor’s degree preferred.

Skills and Knowledge:

Strong knowledge of music theory and sight-reading skills.
Ability to interpret music styles such as classical, jazz, musical theatre and popular.
Knowledge of high school students’ needs and behavior patterns.
Ability to move about frequently in the classroom and in other areas of the school.
Some knowledge of computers and software applications.
Exemplary interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate clearly with staff, students and outside agencies.

Position Expectations:

Assists students in the classroom, under the direction of certified staff by:
1. Collaborating with choral and instrumental teachers to enrich student understanding of how to prepare repertoire and perform successfully
2. Explaining written or verbal instructions.
3. Providing collaborative piano accompaniment for student solo work at various performance opportunities.
Assists certified staff by:
1. Playing off lead sheets and creating read open score where needed
2. Reviewing musical selections and desired types of music with teachers.
3. Selecting repertoire suitable for concerts and special events.
4. Accepting direction from teachers or choreographers as to the specific needs of music being utilized.
5. Leading sectional rehearsals.
6. Interacting with staff to discuss students’ progress.
Attend and participate in Department meetings as needed
Projects a positive image of the district to students, staff and others, and exhibits a positive employee attitude.
Continues job performance enhancement by participating in professional growth activities.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Department Chair, Department Coordinator, and Director of Choral Activities.
