POSITION: INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT - SPECIAL EDUCATION

Reports To: Special Education Teacher and/or Building Principal

Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Length: 7.5 hours/day | 186 days

Salary Schedule/Grade: Classified Pay Scale, Grade 4

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Manassas Park Elementary School is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Instructional Assistant – Special Education to support the academic and social-emotional growth of students with special needs. Under the direction of a certified special education teacher, the instructional assistant will help implement instructional plans, monitor student progress, and foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring students receive the individualized support they need to thrive.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must obtain a qualifying score on the ParaPro Assessment upon hire.
Previous experience working with children or students is preferred.
Ability to work effectively with students of varying ability levels.
Ability to follow written and oral directions in carrying out instructional and behavioral support plans.
Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with students, teachers, parents, and school staff.
Organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (including but not limited to the following)

Support the instructional and behavioral goals outlined by the certified special education teacher and student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Assist individuals or small groups of students with academic instruction in subjects such as reading, math, science, writing, and daily living skills.
Implement behavior intervention plans and strategies developed by the IEP team.
Monitor students in a variety of settings, including the classroom, lunchroom, playground, and life enrichment activities.
Provide clerical support to the teacher, such as organizing instructional materials, maintaining student records, and preparing resources.
Supervise students when the teacher is temporarily unavailable.
Assist with classroom management to ensure a positive, safe learning environment.
Support students’ engagement and independence during learning activities.
Attend required in-service trainings and workshops to support professional growth.
Perform other related duties as assigned to support student success and efficient school operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position requires the ability to:

Communicate effectively through phone and in-person interactions.
Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, calculators, etc.
Perform physical activities such as climbing, standing, walking, lifting, reaching, and bending.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:

Successful completion of a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Screening.
