- Pay Scale: Teacher Salary Scale, with an addition stipend of $15,000 (https://www.mpark.net/departments/human_resources)
- Position Length: 10 months/200 days
- Hours: Full time unless otherwise specified
JOB SUMMARY: The Dual Homeroom / EL Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment while also providing targeted language instruction for English Learners (ELs). This dual-role position includes delivering daily homeroom instruction, integrating language development strategies into classroom instruction, and ensuring compliance with EL documentation and assessment requirements. The teacher will provide 30 minutes of direct language instruction daily to EL students, track their progress, and develop lesson plans aligned with English Language Development (ELD) standards.
This job is being offered as part of a pilot program for the 2025-2026 school year. Data will be collected throughout the year to assess its impact and inform decisions regarding the program’s future.
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
- A bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is required. Must hold a continuing license in Elementary Education through the VA Department of Education.
- 3+ years of experience working with ELs in a classroom setting is preferred.
- Strong understanding of language acquisition and effective EL instructional strategies.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and provide targeted language support in general education.
- Ability to complete all requirements for VA ESOL endorsement before 7/01/2025.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction & Language Support:
- Serve as a homeroom teacher, providing instruction in core subject areas while embedding language supports for ELs.
- Provide at least 30 minutes of direct English language development (ELD) instruction daily to EL students within the classroom.
- Develop and implement daily ELD lesson plans aligned with WIDA standards and student language proficiency levels.
- Utilize research-based strategies to support ELs in accessing grade-level content and improving their language skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of ELs at various proficiency levels.
- Foster an inclusive classroom environment that values linguistic and cultural diversity.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring:
- Assess and monitor EL students' language development using formative and summative assessments.
- Utilize WIDA assessment data and other measures to inform instruction and set language growth goals.
- Maintain up-to-date student language proficiency records and track progress over time.
Compliance & Documentation:
- Complete and manage required EL paperwork, including Individualized Language Plans.
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal EL program requirements.
- Collaborate with EL specialists, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Participate in EL program meetings, professional development, and training as required.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with colleagues, support staff, and administrators to ensure effective language development support for ELs.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, language goals, and instructional strategies.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and EL families to foster engagement and support.
- Work with instructional assistants to ensure direct EL services are met by a properly licensed and endorsed EL teacher.
- Collaborate monthly with district staff to assess the effectiveness of the program model and lesson delivery.
Additional Job Requirements:
- Managing online program management tool and casework paperwork for ELs within the homeroom.
- Attending after-school EL department meetings in addition to grade-level CLTs.
- Attend an in-person, week-long, summer intensive workshop to develop strong EL strategies and curriculum development for daily ELD lessons.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls.
- Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
- Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
