SUMMARY:  

The Safety Coordinator/Attendance & Homeless Liaison supports the district’s strategic plan by ensuring safety and security while promoting regular school attendance and reducing truancy. This role also serves as a homeless liaison, identifying and assisting students experiencing homelessness or in foster care to ensure they have access to resources for academic success. The position collaborates closely with students, families, school and district administrators, local law enforcement, and community agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Safety Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with district and school administration, local law enforcement, first responders, and community partners to develop, implement, and manage safety policies, emergency operations plans, crisis response protocols, and security procedures.
  • Lead and maintain the District Crisis Team; coordinate safety planning and security measures, including event security outside the school day.
  • Conduct training for administrators and staff on safety topics such as A.L.I.C.E., Comprehensive School Threat Assessments, and Trauma-Informed Care.
  • Foster positive relationships with students and stakeholders, promoting student engagement in safety initiatives aligned with the district’s strategic plan and Portrait of a Graduate.
  • Serve as the district liaison to local law enforcement and represent the district in state and national safety organizations.
  • Support administrators during safety and crisis incidents; advocate for safety-related grants and funding.
  • Provide supervision and support at school and community events.

Attendance & Truancy Liaison Responsibilities:

  • Monitor district-wide attendance data to identify trends and at-risk students; coordinate attendance processes and ensure compliance with state and federal attendance laws.
  • Develop and implement intervention plans for students with chronic absenteeism or truancy concerns, working closely with students, families, and school staff to address barriers to attendance.
  • Coordinate home visits, meetings with families, and referrals to community services as necessary.
  • Create and manage attendance improvement initiatives, including incentive programs, parent education, and staff training on attendance policies and truancy laws.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and documentation; prepare and submit required reports to district and state agencies.

Homeless Liaison Responsibilities:

  • Identify students who are homeless or in foster care through school records, referrals, and collaboration with community agencies.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures designed to address the unique challenges faced by homeless students.
  • Maintain detailed records of homeless student enrollments, services provided, and outcomes to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct outreach to families and guardians to inform them of available services and rights under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local shelters, social service agencies, and non-profit organizations to create a support network for families.
  • Ensure immediate enrollment and school stability for students experiencing homelessness or in foster care, regardless of documentation or residency requirements.
  • Coordinate transportation, school supplies, meals, and access to extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with academic planning, tutoring, and mentoring services as needed.
  • Educate school staff about the challenges homeless students face and the resources available, promoting a supportive and understanding school culture.
  • Work closely with school administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff to create individualized support plans for students.
  • Provide regular updates to district officials and state agencies about compliance and the status of homeless student support services.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to state and federal agencies.
  • Stay informed about best practices and changes in federal or state legislation affecting homeless education services including attending conferences.

All Roles:

  • Work closely with students, families, school/district administrators, and community partners to ensure the safety, well-being, and academic success of all students.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to equity, social justice, and inclusion in all practices and position responsibilities
  • Participate in professional learning meetings, workshops, conferences and networks related to all roles.
  • Participates in district and school initiatives, adheres to building and district school improvement plans.
  • Keep in confidence all personal, student or personnel records and information.
  • Adheres to district and school rules and procedures.
  • Conducts behavior to demonstrate collegiality and professionalism.
  • Mandated Reporter for Child Abuse and Neglect.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the position.
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Position includes supervisory responsibilities over students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, counseling, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Professional history in education, social services, or a similar field, with a focus on attendance monitoring, truancy intervention, or supporting at-risk students.
  • Proficiency in communication, technology, organization, and problem-solving.
  • Familiarity with laws, regulations, and ethical standards related to safety and security.
  • Knowledge of federal and state requirements concerning students who are homeless or in foster care.
  • Skilled in data analysis and maintaining accurate records.
  • Strong grasp of state attendance laws and truancy policies.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach to working with vulnerable populations.
  • Applicants must satisfactorily pass a criminal background check as defined by the State of Michigan.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to explain and demonstrate appropriate leadership techniques.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: 

  • Ability to integrate technology into the everyday work flow is necessary.
  • Ability to utilize District technology and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the District. 
  • Ability to use computer technology for research, data management, communications and other instruction.
  • Ability to use a personal computer (PC) or MAC in a networked environment to utilize the Internet and other electronic communications mechanisms. 
  • Knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office (word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software) is required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to apply the concepts of basic math, algebra and geometry consistent with the duties of this position.

  • Highly proficient in subject areas of: reasoning, problem solving, organizational dynamics and emotional intelligence.

The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud depending upon the activity in the particular part of the day. TERMS:  

The contract, salary and other employment conditions will be established by the Superintendent.  Further, applicants must agree to fully participate in all relevant training inclusive of or unique to the department assigned and the District.
