Primary Purpose:

The High School Head Coach, Assistant Coach/Junior High Coach, shall be responsible for developing an athletic program under the leadership of the Principal, the Director of Athletics and the Head Coach of each sport with which their school is coordinated.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for subject and level assigned
Demonstrated competency in the core academic subject area assigned.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

1. Confer with the Athletic Director if a player is to be dismissed from the program. There will be a 24-hour cooling off period before disciplinary action may be taken. Keep the Athletic Director up to date on all problems as they arise.

2. Responsible for having itineraries for all out-of-town games and trips. Keep the Athletic Director informed of all changes as they occur.

3. Responsible to the Athletic Director and the Principal for submitting eligibility lists of participants for the sport he is coaching. This list should be complete and in the mail to the proper sources before his team competes against another school.

4. Responsible to the Athletic Director and the Principal regarding furnishing a traveling list of players. This list needs to be emailed at least one (1) day prior to the event. The Athletic Director should approve the means of travel and the departure time.

5. Responsible for recommending to the Athletic Director the name of athletes who have earned athletic awards.

6. Responsible for submitting a written list of items for repair which involve a particular sport. Do not hesitate to call the Athletic Director when a hazard exists where facilities are concerned. An emergency merits an immediate phone call to the Director of Athletics.

7. Responsible for staying with the participants until they have dressed and gone home. See that all the facilities are securely locked before leaving!

8. Attend all district or league meetings pertaining to his sport.

9. The coach works closely with the parents when a player is ill or injured. Never allow an athlete to participate or practice if alleged to be ill or injured. The coach will abide by the decision made on behalf of the health and safety of the athlete.

10. Secure game officials, meet the visiting teams, supply visiting teams their needs and takes care of any other requirements for the orderly performance at all games and events.

11. Responsible for the equipment used in his sport. An inventory of all equipment should be kept up to date.

12. Provide direction and assistance to assistant coaches to assure coordination and success in each sport.

13. Teach good physical and mental attitudes.

14. Assist the Athletic Director in developing a public relations program to keep boosters and patrons informed as the accomplishments of the athletic department.

15. Cooperate with the media---radio, TV, and press. Call in results as soon as possible after the event/game end.

16. Turn in game or meet results to the Athletic Director. May also like to place results in the school daily bulletin.

17. Set a good example for all athletes and for the public in manners, conduct, attitude, dress and character.

18. Provide an inventory to the Athletic director at least once a year, along with budgetary request.

19. Be responsible for the upkeep of the fields, gym, locker rooms and buses.

20. Be in attendance at all coaches’ meetings.

21. Turn in a list of the total number of participants according to squad.

22. Work at yearly events as necessary to benefit athletic program.

23. Work at other sporting events as your time permits (track meets, basketball games, etc.).

24. Make efforts to attend other athletic contests.

25. Attend other school events to show support for other faculty and for your student athletes who may also be involved in these activities.

26. Cooperate with the Booster Club.

27. Responsible for completing budgetary requests on time.

28. Responsible to the Principal and to the Athletic Director for behavior and the behavior of all assistants while carrying out any duties connected with athletics.

29. Responsible for scheduling of all games and meets. Work with assistants and consult the Athletic Director if necessary. Turn in schedules as soon as available for approval. Do no put out schedules until approval has been given.

Major Responsibilities and Duties of Assistant Coach/Junior High Coach:

30. Teach the types of offense, defense and drills suggested by the High School Head Coach.

31. Implement under the Director of Athletics and Head Coach an off-season training program.

32. Is a participating, cooperative member of the coaching staff and is interested in providing leadership to every part of the athletic program, as well as the total school program.

33. Cooperate with community agencies and the press.

34. Assist the Head Coach in efforts to maintain good home-school relations.

35. Work with school-related activities in their efforts to boost the school district’s athletic program.

36. Promote the athletic program to participants and help develop pride and the desire to excel in athletics.

37. Encourage athletes to continue participating in athletics.

38. Responsible for care of injured players. (Refers them to the trainer assigned to the school, physician, or hospital in emergency cases.)

39. Attend all in-service training programs held by the Director of Athletics and the Head Coach.

40. Give proper care and maintenance to all athletic equipment.

41. Attend all meetings necessary to implement U.I.L. rules.

42. Perform other duties from time to time that may be assigned by the Principal and the Director of Athletics.

43. Encourage his players to participate in other sports.

44. Perform other duties as assigned.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on evaluation of professional personnel.

Terms of Employment: 187 days, salary schedule as recommended by the Superintendent and approved by the Board.
