General Summary

 

In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the School Nurse provides health care support services to students within the District. This individual performs a variety of professional nursing and general health care functions and tasks, such as serving as a consultant to school personnel and providing health guidance to school educational and safety teams. The staff member conducts in-service programs for professional and support staff; provides information and communicates the needs of students; and makes determinations to exclude students with contagious conditions or diseases. The School Nurse provides first aid care and handles emergency situations involving student and staff injuries or health conditions.

 

About the Role

 

1.       Participates in committee meetings and conferences regarding health services and health education, student conferences/meetings, and District-wide committees as appropriate.

2.       Provides staff training on the implementation of student health plans.

3.       Provides medication administration training.

4.       Provides information and communicates the needs of students to parents, school personnel, physicians, and other appropriate parties.

5.       Provides first aid care and assists in health crisis situations.

6.       Coordinates AED team and maintains equipment.

7.       Maintains valid EpiPens in all school buildings.

8.       Contacts parents, guardians, agencies, or health professionals as necessary.

9.       Conducts in-services or other education programs for staff regarding proper administration or adherence to student health procedures.

10.   Maintains and respects confidentiality of student information.

11.   Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education, Knowledge and Skills Required

 

1.       Possess a valid Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse; BSN preferred

2.       Possess a current interim, standard, or professional school nurse certificate issued by the Michigan State Board of Education, or be immediately eligible for one of the three categories of certification

3.       A minimum of two (2) years of professional nursing experience in child health preferred

4.       Ability and desire to work with a diverse student body with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender or gender identity
