General Summary

 

In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the School Counselor is responsible for providing a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 9-12.  As a member of the professional staff, the guidance counselor should consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to other middle school educational programs.

 

About the Role

 

1.       Provides personal and social counseling for individuals and/or groups.

2.       Organizes and facilitates course scheduling for students.

3.       Completes 504 evaluations for students and coordinates current 504 plans.

4.       Assists students in problem-solving classroom and interpersonal conflict utilizing Restorative Practices.

5.       Monitors student credit accumulation and tracks individual student credit audits and graduation planning.

6.       Provides post-secondary planning and support.

7.       Assists in the management of individual student Tiered Behavior Plans.

8.       Consults and collaborates with teachers, school administration and other school staff to assess student needs.

9.       Establishes relationships with parents and consults with them as needed.

10.   Utilizes community resources by referring students, as needed, to appropriate resources while in consultation with their parents.

11.   Establishes effective relationships with students by accepting and respecting all students.

12.   Displays knowledge of professional field and participates in professional development.

13.   May act as a member of the District Crisis Intervention Team.

14.   Fosters and provides opportunities for career exploration for students.

15.   Assists in implementing school improvement goals.

16.   Maintains professional ethics and responsibilities.

17.   Facilitates and assists in building assessments.

18.   Assists with testing coordination.

Education, Knowledge and Skills Required

 

1.       Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with NT endorsement or Master's degree in School Counseling with a current Michigan Counseling License.

2.       Prior experience working with students

3.       Ability to work within a flexible schedule

4.       Demonstrated computer skills

5.       Personal values must include teamwork and customer service

6.       Demonstrated commitment to professional growth

7.       Affiliation with Professional Counseling Associations and resources locally and nationally
