Job Description

Title: School Nurse

Location: COOR Educational Center

Reports To:     Principal

Summary: We are seeking a compassionate and skilled School Nurse to join our specialized education program. The School Nurse will play a critical role in supporting the health, safety, and well-being of our students by providing medical care, health education, and collaboration with staff, families, and healthcare providers.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field

2.  Possession of a valid Michigan Registered Nurse (RN) license.

3. Eligible for school nurse certification (interim, standard or professional school nurse.)

3. Current CPR and First Aid certification

4.  Minimum of 3 years of experience in public health or school nursing preferred.

5. Experience working with children, especially children with disabilities. 

6.  Excellent communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

7.  Experience working with students with disabilities, cognitive impairments, or special healthcare needs is highly desirable.

8.  Ability to adapt to diverse medical and behavioral needs in a supportive, patient-centered manner.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide direct nursing care to students, including medication administration, treatments, and emergency response.
  2. May administer and/or recommend first aid treatment to students/staff.
  3. Monitor medical conditions of students/staff such as temperatures, seizures, injuries, and communicable diseases.
  4. Monitor and manage chronic conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, and feeding tube care.
  5. Develop and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and collaborate on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) as needed.
  6. Support students with hygiene, mobility, and medical equipment needs in coordination with staff.
  7. Refer students/staff requiring further care to appropriate agencies.
  8. Train and educate teachers, paraprofessionals, and caregivers on student-specific medical needs, emergency procedures, and health protocols.
  9. Consults, counsels and collaborates with students, parents, guardians, school personnel, and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
  10. Maintain accurate health records and ensure compliance with school health regulations and policies.
  11. Reporting, recording, and communication on health problems, accident/injury reports, insurance forms, emergency cards and immunization data as appropriate
  12. Coordinates and/or conducts medical screening tests including hearing, vision, dental, etc.
  13. Coordinates and delivers in-service training for staff relative to:
    1. Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan
    2. CPR
    3. First Aid
  14. Manages inventory, orders, and distributes medical and first aid supplies.
  15. Collaborates with school administrators and staff related to health care needs/plans.
  16. Develops and implements an age-appropriate sexual health curriculum tailored to the needs of students.

Other Duties:

In the performance of essential job functions of this position, the individual may:

a. Have regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

b. Be required to travel between building sites. Mileage will be reimbursed at the IRS mileage rate.

Hazards:

In the performance of essential job functions of this position, the individual may:

a. Occasionally be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.

b. Occasionally encounter disruptive students and/or adults.


Terms of Employment: 184-day contract, 7 hours/day, five days per week according to school calendar. 

Salary: As per the C.O.O.R. ISD master agreement salary schedule

Evaluation:  Performance on this job will be evaluated annually as required.
