Job description

Classroom: MoCI (Moderate Cognitive Impairment) or SCI (Severe Cognitive Impairment), depending on the filling of vacancies daily within the COOR Educational Center.

JOB OBJECTIVES:

Carries out direct services designed and planned by the therapist/teacher, which will enable the therapist/teacher to devote more time to direct services/consultant activities and integrate (mainstream) special education services/activities into the classroom.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Para-Professionals work in classrooms to assure a safe and orderly running of the student’s daily routines. They assist with student activities, assistive devices, safety, and behavioral programming. They provide the teacher with support, as needed, by providing small group and one-on-one instruction, supervision of students during free time and lunch, as well as assisting students in personal care routines, such as bathroom usage. They also assist the teacher in the development of materials, ensuring safety routines are followed and protection of students during emergencies. This position is considered at risk for exposure to Hepatitis B and may come in contact with hazardous chemicals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Follow all established policies, practices, and procedures in terms of duties and responsibilities of the position as delegated by the building principal.
• Carry out planned activities of the therapist/teacher and reinforce goals and objectives.
• Works independently with individuals and /or groups of students, records and reports on services provided to the student in an organized manner.
• Demonstrate positive attitudes, good attendance, punctuality, motivation, good time management skills, flexibility, and a positive work attitude.
• Accepts supervision and constructive criticism.
• Interacts and communicates responsibly with students, parents, staff, and other administrators.
• Performs other tasks as assigned by the teacher/supervisor, such as lunch duty, playground supervision, the maintenance of health, safety and cleanliness of students, assisting students to and from the bathroom, catheterizing a student at the bathroom when necessary, perform classroom and related work, recreational activities, etc.
• Maintain a cooperative, harmonious relationship with professionals and others within the school setting which fosters recognition and respect for every individual.
• Perform such tasks as the building principal/supervisor may request in order to promote cooperative teamwork.
• Follow school building rules and procedures outlined by the building principal.
• Employees will follow all health and safety rules, policies, and procedures.
• Perform duties according to COOR safety and health policies.
• Keep the work area in a neat and organized manner, and surrounding areas clean and orderly to maintain health and safety according to COOR policies.
• Physically capable of performing CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc.) techniques, and lifting and positioning students.
• CPI certification must be maintained, and methods used consistently.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and necessary safety precautions for oneself and others, sufficient to be able to establish a safe work environment. Ability to use the principles of safety and to perform skills protecting the health and safety of self, students, and other co-workers.
• This position is considered “at-risk” for exposure to blood-borne pathogens. An awareness of potential risk and good practice in relation to “infection control” is necessary.
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Michigan Right-to-Know law and its practices.

CRITICAL SKILLS / EXPERTISE / QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be 18 years old or older, and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Shall meet all qualifications as stated in the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District Special Education Plan.
• Successful completion of Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. Training.
• Experience in implementing and recording data for a Behavior Intervention Plan developed for an individual student.
• Must meet all Federal requirements for Highly Qualified Paraprofessional as required by No Child Left Behind.
• Experience working with physically aggressive students.
• Successfully pass a Criminal Background Check for work in an educational setting.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Will participate in training sessions as requested by the administration.
• Assists in the evaluation of student’s progress when requested.
• Demonstrates good language skills.
• Demonstrates initiative for self-improvement.

REPORTS TO:

Classroom Teacher and/or Supervisor (Moderately Cognitively Impaired Classroom)

WAGES & BENEFITS:

Per the Master Agreement between the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District and C.O.O.R. ISD Educational Support Personnel Association (CESPA) and the Michigan Education Association (MEA).

HOURS:

Per Master Agreement between the COOR Intermediate School District and COOR Educational Support Personnel Association - Michigan Education Association

The Organization:

C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District serves students from four counties: Crawford, Oscoda, Ogemaw, and Roscommon. Our educational center provides services to students with disabilities who cannot be educated in their local district. Our staff are dedicated to nurturing our students as they learn and grow.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.03 per hour
