Job description

This position would begin July 1, with an in-person start date of Monday August 19th.

JOB OBJECTIVES:
Provide direct education services to students with disabilities focusing primarily on the life skills, activities of daily living, pre-vocational, and motor development areas.

DESIRED EDUCATION:
Must have full or be able to obtain temporary approval as a Special Education Teacher – Cognitive Impairment as per Michigan Department of Special Education Rules (340.1786). Michigan teaching certificate with K-12 endorsement required.

POSSIBLE EXPERIENCES:

  • Successful teaching in a special education setting, center-based experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE)
  • Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment of students with special needs

POSITION OVERVIEW:
The classroom teacher provides direct educational services to students with disabilities, focusing on teaching skills such as personal care, health, and fitness, domestic skills, behavioral skills, vocational skills, and social interaction skills to assist students to live and work in the community. The teacher is responsible for attending educational meetings, working as part of a team to develop student programming, and the supervision of staff assigned to their classroom. The classroom is part of a facility designed to provide services to students with severe and moderate cognitive impairments.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Will complete assessments of students, and based upon those assessments will develop Individualized Educational Plans for those students; including the development of the Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP), Identification of Unique Individualized Educational needs, and Goals and Instructional Objectives for students assigned to their caseloads.

2. Will be responsible for the instructional planning for the classroom and the delivery or direction of instructional activities in the classroom and other settings within the school and the community.

3. Will be responsible for the implementation of health / physical care and allergy plans designed by primary health care provider for the students in the classroom and the delivery of or direction of those health / physical care activities in the classroom and other settings within the school and the community.

4. Will be responsible for the development and organization of the classroom structure and physical environment of the classroom and implement the organization with the assistance of the assigned teacher assistants.

5. Will develop, provide, and utilize instructional plans, strategies, methods, materials, and techniques that best meet the needs of individual students.

6. Will provide leadership, direction, and oversight of the paraprofessionals within the classroom environment and/or related school-based or community-based instructional sites.

7. Will timely and accurately complete required and necessary paperwork, including but not limited to Lesson Plans, collect/analyze data, progress reports, and follow Emergency plans, Behavioral support plans/documentation, Functional Behavioral Assessments, etc.

8. Will assist in the delivery of instruction in Physical Education and other related instructional activities where another lead teacher might be providing instruction to the caseload of students.

9. Will complete and provide program reports as directed by the building Administration and/or building procedure.

10. Will communicate appropriately and effectively with parents in writing and verbally.

11. Will participate as part of a work team and work effectively with others within the school environment.

12. Will attend required workshops, in-services, and trainings.

13. Physically capable of performing CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) techniques, lifting and positioning students.

CRITICAL SKILLS / EXPERTISE / QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must have full or be able to obtain temporary approval as a Special Education Teacher – Cognitive Impairment as per Michigan Department of Special Education Rules (340.1786). Michigan teaching certificate with K-12 endorsement required.

2. Knowledge and/or experience with moderate cognitive impaired or severe multiple impaired children.

3. Must be able to communicate effectively with parents, teachers, and school administrators.

4. Must be able to work successfully with students, parents, staff, advocacy groups, and the community.

5. Must be able to work well with others as a team member in a work team environment.

6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

7. Willingness to learn and utilize basic computer software programs.

8. Experience supervising classroom professionals preferred.

9. Experience with developing and implementing behavior plans preferred.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Participate in cooperative planning with outside agencies, special education ancillary personnel, parents of students with disabilities involved, and administrators.

2. Assume responsibility for keeping informed of current developments in own field and related fields of special education and maintain readiness to adapt to change.

WAGES, HOURS, & BENEFITS:
Per Master Agreement between the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District and the C.O.O.R. Education Association.
