Position Overview

The Learner Engagement and Attendance Program Coordinator is responsible for ensuring student attendance and academic participation for students at BLC and The Transition Academy. This person will develop and implement strategies and initiatives that foster strong relationships in and between students, staff, and families- especially for those who have not been attending, engaged, or dropped out of school. The Learner Engagement and Attendance Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with school attendance teams to support effective school engagement and an inclusive school culture that cultivates successful academic, behavioral, and social-emotional outcomes for all students. The Learner Engagement and Attendance Program Coordinator will follow up with students, staff, and families to reduce barriers to school attendance, including data tracking.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Coordinate with school attendance teams and district leaders to ensure adherence to state compulsory attendance law and that local board attendance policy and regulations are met.

· Interpret and enforce compulsory attendance laws and supervise the resolution of students’ chronic absenteeism.

· Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to student attendance monitoring.

· Organize and implement attendance incentives to maintain or improve student attendance rates.

· Meet with students with chronic absenteeism concerns to both recognize improved attendance and problem-solve with students and families to provide the support needed to improve attendance.

· Meet with students and their families to provide personalized early outreach services.

· When an attendance barrier is identified, connect parent/guardian with necessary resources.

· Prepare monthly attendance reports to identify students reaching key thresholds for interventions.

· Prepare reports, surveys, and data reporting for student enrollment.

· Ensure that school goals related to chronic absenteeism are met or exceeded.

· Maintain all data systems related to chronic absenteeism.

· Maintain parent communication in response to chronic absenteeism.

· Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop successful action plans for students.

· Facilitate monthly, quarterly, and annual attendance incentives for students.

· Maintain professional awareness of regulations regarding child welfare and attendance by having a working knowledge of state law, Board policy, and administrative regulations.

· Assist in the planning and facilitation of professional development activities to support school-based staff.

· Performs other related work duties as assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience

· High School Diploma required; associate or bachelor's Degree preferred

· Experience working in an urban education setting

· Knowledge of CT truancy and attendance laws and regulations preferred

· Willingness and interest in working with a diverse population of students and families

· Results oriented individual

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills

· Ability to use common office machines, word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance programs

· Knowledge of youth, school and community-based programs

· Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from that information.

· Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
