Job Summary

The role of the Director of Human Resources will lead the strategic HR business partnerships and ensure compliance with state and federal employment regulations. This position will provide the vision and direction for cultivating an exceptional employee experience through the full employee life cycle and managing strategic priorities and operations that support Benton Harbor.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business or Accounting
  • Two (2) years of Payroll & Benefits processing experience
  • Three (3) years of Human Resources experience
  • Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban-rural, multi-racial, and multi-ethnic school district
Preferred Skills
  • Master's degree or higher in Business or Accounting
  • SHRM or HRCI Certification as a Senior Professional Certified Professional or Professional Certified Professional 
  • School experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Human Resources is primarily responsible for:

  • Cultivate programs, training, and tools to improve the talent management capacity and capabilities of managers thereby improving the overall employee experience
  • Collaborate senior leaders in the development and launch of equity and diversity strategies
  • Consults with the Superintendent and other personnel on matters relating to the school district's legal and personnel affairs.
  • Attends school board meetings and prepares such reports as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Lead in the negotiations of the union contracts for certified and non-certified personnel.
  • Supervise Human Resource Team
  • Update Crisis Manual for the District
  • Develop all job descriptions for the district
  • Serves as the primary contact person for all communication and negotiation with benefit vendors
  • Oversees insurance benefit enrollments, changes, and terminations for the district
  • Oversees benefit compliance-related  & human resources reporting as required by the State, Federal and Local Agencies
  • Oversee all applications and draft new hire paperwork and background check & drug screening per BHAS BOE approval.
  • Oversee all FMLA and Extended Leave transactions for the district 
  • Maintain and Develop key HR Policies around Employment 
  • Process all District accidents for our insurance vendor.
  • Assisting with audit preparation

Terms of Employment:

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement, if applicable
