Position Summary

The Director of Facilities and Maintenance is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operational integrity of all district facilities and grounds. This role ensures a safe, clean, and efficient environment conducive to learning and working. The Director will supervise custodial staff, manage supply procurement, oversee the vehicle fleet, and coordinate regular inspections and compliance with safety regulations. This is a salaried position with benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

Supervision and Staff Management:

  • Lead, supervise, and evaluate custodial and maintenance staff, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement training programs to enhance staff skills and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current with industry standards.
  • Encourage and facilitate training opportunities for staff to improve skills and knowledge in facilities maintenance and safety.

Facility Maintenance and Operations:

  • Plan, organize, and direct the maintenance and repair of all district facilities, including buildings, grounds, and equipment.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure the longevity and efficient operation of facilities and systems.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify and address maintenance needs promptly.

Supply and Inventory Management:

  • Oversee the procurement, storage, and distribution of maintenance and custodial supplies, ensuring cost-effective purchasing and adequate inventory levels.
  • Maintain accurate records of supplies and equipment, managing budgets effectively.

Fleet Management:

  • Oversee the district's fleet of vehicles, ensuring regular maintenance, safety inspections, and compliance with transportation regulations.
  • Coordinate vehicle usage and scheduling to meet district needs efficiently.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Conduct weekly, monthly, semiannual, and annual inspections of facilities and grounds to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
  • Maintain records required by the Fire Marshal and coordinate inspections of systems such as HVAC, boilers, fire alarms, and emergency equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding building safety, health, and environmental standards.

Project Management:

  • Plan and oversee capital improvement projects, including new construction, renovations, and major repairs.
  • Develop project specifications, solicit bids, and manage contracts with external vendors and contractors.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standards.

Energy and Sustainability:

  • Develop and implement energy conservation and sustainability initiatives.
  • Monitor and manage the district's energy consumption and utility costs.
  • Promote environmentally responsible practices throughout the district.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with principals and other district administrators to assess facility needs and prioritize maintenance and repair projects.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for facilities-related issues and inquiries.
  • Communicate effectively with district administration, staff, parents, and community members regarding facilities matters.

Budgeting and Financial Management:

  • Develop and manage the facilities and maintenance budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
  • Monitor expenditures and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Identify and apply for grants and other funding opportunities to support facilities projects.

Fire Safety and Emergency Systems Compliance:

  • Maintain all required fire safety records for the State Fire Marshal.
  • Conduct regular inspections of fire safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, emergency exit signs, emergency lighting, fire alarm systems, and fire suppression systems.
  • Coordinate with external agencies for inspections of fire alarms, sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, boilers, and other required emergency systems.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal fire safety regulations.
  • Develop and maintain schedules for all mandated inspections and documentation.


Education and Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Relevant certifications in facility maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, or a related field required or the ability to obtain within a designated time frame.
  • Must be willing to complete additional training and certifications as required by state and district regulations or requests.

Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in facilities maintenance and operations, with at least three years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in a school district or educational environment is highly desirable.
