Job Summary:
The Special Education Teacher Consultant provides specialized support, guidance, and expertise to students, teachers, and families to ensure the academic, social, and emotional success of students with diverse learning needs. This role involves collaborating with general education staff, developing individualized education plans (IEPs), and implementing evidence-based strategies to promote inclusive education while meeting state and federal compliance standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to design and adapt curriculum, instructional strategies, and assessments for students with disabilities.
- Conduct assessments and observations to identify student needs and recommend appropriate accommodations or modifications.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs, ensuring goals are measurable, achievable, and aligned with student potential.
- Provide direct consultation and coaching to classroom teachers on differentiated instruction, behavior management, and assistive technology use.
- Serve as a liaison between school staff, parents/guardians, and external service providers to foster a cohesive support system for students.
- Facilitate professional development workshops for faculty on special education best practices and legal requirements.
- Maintain accurate records, progress reports, and documentation in compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
- Advocate for students’ needs during team meetings, ensuring equitable access to education and resources.
- Stay current on special education trends, research, and interventions to enhance service delivery.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Valid Michigan teaching certification in Special Education or ability to obtain one.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working with students with disabilities.
- Strong knowledge of learning progressions, IEP processes, and federal laws (e.g., IDEA, Section 504).
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency with educational technology and data management systems.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with transition planning from grade to grade.
- Familiarity with positive behavior intervention supports (PBIS).
- Training in crisis intervention or de-escalation techniques.
Work Environment:
This position involves working in a school setting with occasional travel for meetings or professional development. The role requires flexibility to address the dynamic needs of students and staff.
