Essential Functions:
- Operate assigned school bus in a safe and legal manner consistent with district, state, county, and federal regulations
- Read, understand and follow all motor vehicles laws of the State of Washington, all regulations and Washington State Laws for School Bus Drivers, the State of Washington School Bus Driver Handbook, the Rainier School District's School Bus Driver Handbook, and Rules for students riding Rainier School buses
- Inspect the assigned school bus daily prior to each operation in accordance with state and district regulations and expectations
- Report any mechanical defects and safety hazards immediately
- Transport passengers to and from school or other school-related activities
- Maintain discipline on the bus consistent with district policies, regulations and procedures
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, district staff, parents and community members
- Conduct post-trip inspection: verify that all passengers have departed, close windows and refuel school bus
- Maintain and submit daily bus logs; maintain, complete and submit all forms, records, and other reports as required
- Obtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities
- Comply with district safety rules and regulations
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 21 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred
- Washington State Driver's License with CDL endorsement and valid Washington State school bus driver's endorsement
- Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description
- Minimum of two years of successful driving experience
- State and Federal background clearance
Requirements:
- Effective communication skills
- Writing skills necessary to complete transportation/driver paperwork
- Possession of a good driving safety record
- Ability to proficiently operate all sizes and types of school buses in the Rainier School District
- Willingness and ability to drive any school bus as directed by the transportation supervisor in any type of weather
- Have the ability to concentrate on safe, defensive driving under various distracting circumstances
- Positive attitude toward students, parents, teachers and other district staff members
- Team oriented; ability to work with a variety of people
- Ability to work with and sensitivity to cultural developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of students, staff and community
- Ability to read and interpret maps
- Flexibility to accept scheduling changes as necessary to meet district needs
- Willingness and ability to receive periodic retraining and updating of driving skills
- Willingness and ability to perform cleaning and upkeep school bus tasks
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of proper operation of transportation equipment, including special education transportation equipment
- Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door, and provide necessary assistance in an emergency situation and/or evacuation
- Knowledge of safety standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation as required in the Washington State Handbook. This includes maintaining necessary certifications and endorsements and keeping them in your possession at all times
- Ability to establish rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, parents and visitors
- Willingness to benefit from department supervision, evaluation programs and professional development
- Must be punctual and dependable, able to work well with others, and maintain good health
- Follow School Board policies and procedures
- Strong student management capabilities
- Sensitivity to diverse socioeconomic and ethnic groups
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation

- The State of Washington requires a State and Federal Fingerprint check before hiring any new employee.
