Position:            Preschool – 5th grade Music Teacher

                

Location:               River Valley Elementary

 

Compensation:  According to the negotiated Master Agreement with the River Valley Education Association.

 

Job Summary:  The Elementary Music Teacher is responsible for creating a dynamic and engaging music education program that introduces students to the fundamentals of music and inspires a lifelong love of music. The teacher will plan and deliver music lessons, lead rehearsals and performances, assess student progress, and collaborate with colleagues to integrate music education concepts into other subject areas.  To promote and encourage positive relationships with students, parents and staff members.  Work is performed under the supervision of the principal.

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field.
  • Valid Michigan teaching certification with music endorsement.
  • Previous experience teaching music at the elementary level.
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, music history, and music pedagogy.
  • Proficiency in playing and teaching a variety of musical instruments.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and a passion for teaching music to children.

 

Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop and implement a standards-based music curriculum that introduces students to a variety of musical concepts, genres, and instruments.
  • Plan and deliver engaging and developmentally appropriate music lessons that cater to the diverse needs and interests of elementary students.
  • Teach fundamental music skills such as rhythm, melody, harmony, and music notation through singing, playing instruments, and listening activities.
  • Lead rehearsals and performances of choral groups, instrumental ensembles, or other musical productions.
  • Incorporate technology and multimedia resources to enhance music instruction and student learning.
  • Assess student progress in music skills and knowledge through performance-based assessments, observations, and other evaluation methods.
  • Provide constructive feedback to students to help them develop their musical abilities and confidence.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel supported, encouraged, and inspired to participate in music activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to integrate music education concepts into other subject areas and school-wide initiatives.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, participation, and opportunities for involvement in music programs.
  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance teaching practices and stay informed about current trends in music education. Flexibility, creativity, and a passion for teaching children to love music
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by modeling, teaching, expecting and enforcing behavioral expectations in a firm, fair, friendly manner so kids are employable and fulfill their potential as adults.

 

Physical requirements of the job:  

  • Ability to stand, move around the classroom, and demonstrate musical techniques for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry musical instruments and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • The job requires the employee to be directly responsible for safety and well-being of other people.
