JOB SUMMARY

To assist in the performance of maintenance work that will help maintain the school district’s buildings, grounds, and equipment in the best working order possible. To help provide a safe learning environment for the students of the District.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assists in the preparation for daily assignments for the purpose of ensuring effective and organized operations. 
    1. Logs into computer and checks emails and/or other communications. 
    2. Reviews work orders and/or work activities planned for the day.
    3. Reviews schedules with custodial staff and/or others as appropriate.  
    4. Follows instructions from Facilities Supervisor to modify schedules or perform activities.  
    5. Coordinating with the Maintenance Mechanic, prioritizes daily work activities. Updates ongoing schedules as needed. 
       
  2. Assists in processing requests for maintenance services utilizing a work order system for the purpose of organizing and tracking maintenance activities.
    1. Reviews incoming requests.
    2. Determines work required to respond to request.  
    3. Requests materials or items needed and/or makes recommendations for outside assistance.
    4. Assists with work activities with other staff or outside vendors.
    5. Tracks work completion utilizing the work order system. 
  3. Helps care for and maintain inventory of supplies and equipment for the purpose of having items available to perform job functions. 
    1. Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment for facilities and grounds maintenance. 
    2. Works with the Facilities Supervisor and the Building Maintenance Mechanic to order supplies and/or equipment as needed or as funds are available.
    3. Assists with activities requiring repairs of equipment. 
    4. Routinely checks supplies available. 
    5. Restocks items as needed.
    6. Communicates with Supervisor and/or other staff to ensure adequate inventory of items is available. 
    7. Takes care in use of supplies and equipment to ensure safe operating conditions and adherence to district and other safety regulations.
    8. Routinely checks for safe and effective operation of equipment
  4. Assists in performing a wide variety of maintenance activities to repair grounds, facilities, tools, equipment, work aids and other related items for the purpose of ensuring the safe and effective operation of items in support of the educational and operational programs. Maintenance activities (inspection and repair) to include but are not limited to the following, where limitations would occur if a specialized license and/or outside contract is required to perform functions:
    1. Heating and Ventilation systems (Air Conditioning).
    2. Electrical systems and lighting.
    3. Alarms and security systems, including crash bars and locks.
    4. Plumbing, drains, toilets, urinals and septic systems.
    5. Boilers
    6. Building’s exterior (windows, doors, walls, outside, etc.).
    7. Grounds, including parking lots and lighting.
    8. Playground or other outside equipment (goal posts, scoreboards, etc.)
    9. Machinery and tools. 
    10. Fire suppression system, including fire extinguishers.
    11. Bleachers, stage, gymnasium equipment.
    12. Sprinklers or watering systems.
    13. Small motors.
    14. Kitchen equipment or tools. 
    15. Roofs, gutters and related roofing items. 
    16. Propane tanks and water heaters.
    17. Generators.
    18. Washers and dryers.
    19. Cement work.
    20. Furniture.
    21. Painting or structural repairs.
    22. Lockers and other storage items. 
       
  5. Maintains all district grounds for the purpose of ensuring district and community investment of properties and safe operating condition of related items. 
    1. Operates mowers, trimmers, edgers and related equipment to perform routine mowing activities.
    2. Removes weeds from planter areas, walkways, curbs, fence lines, etc. using manual methods or power equipment as appropriate.
    3. Organizes and assists in the removal of snow from parking lots, sidewalks and grounds. Applies de-icers as necessary (this may require a minimum of 3 workers).
    4. Sets sprinklers and watering systems. 
    5. Measures and marks sports fields (this may require a minimum of 3 workers).
    6. Maintains and repairs fencing and signs.
    7. Assists in the maintenance of the chlorination system. 
    8. Assists in the maintenance of the Soda Ash Injection System.
    9. Assists in the maintenance of the LOSS (Large On-Site Septic System), including White Water System.
    10. Assists in the maintenance of the on-site Stormwater retention system.
  6. Assists in performing carpentry and construction duties to support educational and operational programs.
    1. Requests items as needed for projects.
    2. Completes projects, including installation. 
       
  7. Assists in performing a wide variety of routine inspections of facilities and equipment to ensure proper and safe working order.
    1. Logs and checks systems daily.
    2. Assists with scheduled and unscheduled inspections, primarily of grounds, playground equipment, facilities, equipment, motors, tools and other related items. 
    3. Assists with required fire, safety and earthquake inspections. 
  8. Supports specialized maintenance projects with districts officials, other district staff, and/or outside contracts and vendors for the purpose of ensuring facilities and equipment are available and in proper working order. 
    1. Always works with district officials or supervisor to coordinate special projects.
    2. Participates as a team member to determine project needs. 
    3. Assists by obtaining estimates and quotes.
    4. Assists in the monitoring of work performed by outside contractors or vendors. 
    5. Assists in the inspection of work of outside contracts and vendors.
  9. Assists in responding to emergency situations and takes appropriate action for the purpose of attending to the situation in a safe and orderly manner.
    1. Responds to requests for emergency assistance (if at all possible), where the immediate repair of a facility, grounds, equipment or related item is necessary. 
    2. Periodically checks the building for damage and initiates corrective action; conducts playground safety inspections;
    3. Tours grounds to identify and correct safety problems and reports problems beyond the resources and ability of building staff to correct to higher authority. 
    4. Assists with emergency situations as directed by district officials.
  10. Assists others as needed to support maintenance functions and district operations.
    1. Assists with loading or unloading of commodities for food services.
    2. Provides general support to school custodial staff. 
    3. Provides general support to district officials as needed to ensure the proper working order of facilities, equipment and related items. 
  11. Attends meetings and/or training activities to maintain knowledge of job duties and/or required job or district information.
    1. Attends meetings for the purpose of providing and/or receiving information related to the specifi job duties and/or district operational functions.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The individual must be able to perform each essential job duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The following requirements are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities needed to perform the job at a fully acceptable level.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION

  1. Ability to read, perform math calculations, perform oral and written communication at or about the 12th grade level. 
  2. Valid vehicle operator’s license and the ability to respond to emergency situations (if at all possible). 
  3. Previous  experience in Facilities and Grounds Maintenance, preferably in a public school setting.
  4. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
