JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Secondary Education and Graduate Pathways provides instructional leadership, program oversight, and strategic direction for all middle and high schools, as well as alternative and non-traditional programs, including online learning, credit recovery, and re-engagement pathways. This position ensures that all secondary students have equitable access to high-quality educational experiences aligned with the district’s Portrait of a Graduate and state learning standards. The Director supports principals and instructional leaders, manages curriculum implementation, and guides secondary improvement efforts, while also innovating and expanding flexible learning options to meet diverse student needs. The Director collaborates across departments and schools to create a culture of high expectations and meaningful learning experiences for every student, including the development of innovative and optional learning programs that meet the diverse academic, social-emotional, and career goals of students.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:

Valid Washington State Administrator Certificate
Master’s degree in education, curriculum, administration, or related field
Minimum of five (5) years of successful administrative leadership experience, including secondary-level oversight
Strong knowledge of secondary curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices
Demonstrated experience leading equity-focused initiatives and inclusive school practices

Preferred:

Experience overseeing or supporting alternative education, online learning, or credit recovery programs
Experience with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and/or behavioral intervention systems
Familiarity with career and college readiness initiatives, including CTE and post-secondary transition planning

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership and Oversight

Provide direct support and supervision to secondary principals and option program leaders, ensuring implementation of the district’s strategic plan, instructional frameworks, and improvement plans.
Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of 6–12 curriculum, instruction, and assessment aligned with Washington State Learning Standards.
Ensure all secondary schools and options programs maintain compliance with district policies, state laws, WAC/RCW regulations, and OSPI mandates.

Options Schools and Alternative Programs

Oversee district options programs (e.g., Open Doors, New Market partnerships, online/hybrid models, credit recovery, home-based instruction coordination).
Monitor enrollment, academic progress, student attendance, and graduation rates across alternative programs.
Guide the design, refinement, and expansion of flexible learning options, with attention to re-engagement, at-risk student support, and career readiness.

Instructional and Programmatic Support

Support instructional leadership development across secondary schools through coaching, data analysis, and alignment with TPEP and school improvement processes.
Collaborate with the Student Learning department to select and implement instructional materials and professional development for secondary staff.
Work with Special Services, Multilingual Education, and CTE to ensure program integration and support for diverse learners in secondary and options settings.

Collaboration and Communication

A champion of student voice and inclusion, this leader collaborates with school communities to create supportive pathways that empower all students to thrive academically and beyond, and serve as a liaison between secondary schools, district departments, and community stakeholders.
Promote positive partnerships with families, community-based organizations, and higher education institutions to support student pathways and wraparound supports.
Collaborate with Teaching & Learning, Student Services, Human Resources, and Technology departments to align supports and resources.

Equity and Student Achievement

Champion equity and inclusion within all secondary and options school programs, using disaggregated data to identify and address opportunity gaps.
Promote culturally responsive instructional practices and restorative approaches to discipline and student engagement.
Ensure alternative programs support post-secondary transitions, including graduation, employment, apprenticeships, and college readiness.

Other Duties

Assist in planning and facilitating professional development and ACT days for secondary educators.
Oversee secondary course catalog development, registration alignment, and scheduling guidance.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent or Superintendent.

Ability to facilitate change management within individuals and teams including implementing professional development for adult learners.
Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and emerging practices pertaining to assigned responsibilities to include current issues and evidenced-based practices in education.
Knowledge of how the whole child approach to education recognizes the interrelationship between all areas of development and designs school policies and practices to support them.
Commitment to working with students and families from historically underserved communities through an asset-based mindset and approach.
Excellent interpersonal skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
