Purpose Statement

The job of Certificated Instructor - GRAVITY Reengagement Program is done for the purpose of providing appropriate educational opportunities and access to services for students age sixteen to twenty-one who have dropped out of high school or are not accumulating sufficient credits to reasonably complete a high school diploma in a public school before the age of twenty-one; and reengaging older students to help them make progress toward improved career skills.

This job reports to Director - Student Support and Engagement/Gravity.

Essential Functions

• Ability to provide oversite of and collaboration with Instructional Assistants for the purpose of effective management of learning centers.

• Ability to create, develop and monitor on-line courses and learning opportunities for the purpose of engaging students in a hybrid model (face-to-face, distance/on-line and blended models).

• Administers standardized pre- and post-tests (e.g. utilizing a variety of student learning assessments, etc.) for the purpose of determining and reporting adequate progress and course of study completion; modifying curriculum and instruction to increase student achievement.

• Assists with a variety of activities deemed necessary by the Assistant Superintendent- Teaching & Learning or designee (e.g. collaborative partnerships, presentations and written information to various audiences, etc.) for the purpose of meeting program expectations and promoting community awareness.

• Communicates with designated personnel (e.g. coordinating services with program case management staff members, etc.) for the purpose of reducing or eliminating barriers to student participation and success.

• Coordinates the delivery of academic instruction by non-certificated instructional staff members (e.g. directing necessary learning modules, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring high quality instruction.

• Interprets data on student demographics, learning achievement, and program evaluations for the purpose of providing reports and conveying information.

• Keeps current on multiple modalities of instruction and engages with students in a variety of settings for the purpose of meeting the needs of the program and strengthening student outcomes.

• Maintains files and records for the purpose of ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.

• Models instruction and leads adult learning for the program for the purpose of building the abilities of everyone in the program to deliver support to students.

• Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. workshops, seminars, GRAVITY committee meetings, etc.) for the purpose of gathering and conveying information for the advancement of instruction.

• Plans academic instruction (e.g. GED preparation, academic skills instruction, college and work readiness preparation, etc.) for the purpose of enabling students to obtain the academic and work readiness skills necessary for employment or post-secondary study.

• Responds to inquiries from a variety of stakeholders (e.g. teachers, principals, administrators, students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and recommendations.

• Serves as itinerate staff at multiple sites for the purpose of providing content support to meet the learning center's needs.

• Supports all content areas (e.g. Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies, etc.) for the purpose of supporting other staff members.

• Supports the learning and development of Instructional Assistant's knowledge and ability to provide content instruction for the purpose of improving outcomes for students.

• Understands current state standards and teaching practices in their specific content area (e.g. Math, ELA, Science and Social Studies, etc.) for the purpose of large and small group instructions.

• Utilizes a variety of strategies and teaching methods for the purpose of meeting the unique learning needs of each student.

Marginal Functions

• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills are required to perform single tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and presenting instruction effectively and interestingly to culturally and ethnically diverse older students; assessing student learning using multiple measure; researching and applying curriculum (including online/electronic materials); and utilizing office productivity and educational software.

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: knowledge of careers, college readiness, GED preparation, health, mathematics, reading, science, social studies, technology, and work readiness content and instructional practices; and age appropriate activities for students to experience and learn the content and apply the concepts.

Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: effectively establishing and maintaining secure relationships with older youth who have multiple barriers to school success and a history of school disengagement; communicating with persons of varied educational levels; setting priorities; working independently and collaboratively as part of a dispersed team; working with detailed information/data; working with community partners to increase opportunities for student success; working year-round; and, on occasion, working a flexible schedule.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 30% walking, and 60% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.

Experience: Job related experience is required.

Education (Minimum): Bachelors degree in job-related area.

Equivalency: In certain circumstances, enrollment in an approved teacher preparation program and eligibility for a probationary/conditional teacher certificate may be substituted for successful teacher preparation completion. Coursework in alternative education, special education, or counseling related field (school/mental health) preferred; qualifications to teach secondary school coursework required; experience in curriculum development, assessment and current best practices preferred; and experience, aptitude, and interest in serving disengaged adolescents preferred.

Additional Preferences:

Experience working with at risk youth and their parents preferred.
Experience with barrier reduction for vulnerable youth preferred.
Experience teaching to meet the unique learning needs of each student preferred.
