Job Title: Taholah - Academic Counselor

START DATE: 2024-2025 School Year

 SALARY: DOQ

CONTRACT: 1.0 FTE Continuing

Position Summary

High School Academic Counselor shall counsel students with personal problems and/or education concerns to facilitate increased learning. They shall work with students' parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and resource people to try to improve the individual student’s education experience. 

Qualifications 

• Valid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) School Counselor’s certificate. (Preferred)

• Secondary counseling experience preferred. 

Duties & Responsibilities 

• Provide assistance and consultation to staff and students in the areas of learning and behavior. 

• Facilitate the transition of students from one educational level to the next. 

• Provide family consultation service to assist parent(s) with concerns related to students’ school adjustment and performance. 

• Write recommendations on behalf of students for colleges, technical schools, scholarships, special awards and military service. 

• Prepare transcripts for schools, employers, etc. 

• In September and January, review the records of all seniors to check their progress in meeting graduation requirements. He/she shall talk to any students who may have difficulty meeting graduation requirements and write letters in conjunction with the High School Principal, to parent(s)/guardian(s) regarding any such problems. 

• Assist the High School Principal in coordinating and administering the testing program at the High School. 

• Coordinate and set up visits of representatives from colleges, technical schools, the military services and private training facilities. 

• Provide counseling for individuals and groups with educational, social and personal concerns. 

• Provide current information to parents and staff regarding available community resources and agencies. 

• Identify and refer students who may qualify for specialized services, i.e., special education, etc. 

• Assist in the administration, dissemination and interpretation of standardized tests for individuals and groups of students. 

• Provides career counseling to students. 

• Maintain contact with parents, parent-teacher associations and other community organizations in order to promote understanding and good will. 

• Assist with development of strategies or services for students in need of special assistance within the classroom. 

• Meet with other counselors, staff and district committees to work toward good communication and problem solving. 

• Work to develop in the students a sense of consideration for others and of responsibility to contributing to the benefit of the school. 

• Participate in professional growth opportunities. 

• Assist with co-curricular activities as necessary. 

• Perform other duties as assigned. Skills/Abilities 

• Ability to work cooperatively with administration, staff, students and parents. 

• Knowledge/experience of counseling, instructional and behavioral intervention methods.

• Knowledge/experience of community resources available to assist students and families with counseling needs. • Knowledge/experience of assessment, data gathering and interpreting techniques. 

• Knowledge/experience of laws, rules and regulations governing the education of children with disabilities. Experience working with at-risk student population. Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, language and learning diversity.

• Experience in building master schedules. 

• Knowledge/experience with new state learning goals and assessments.
