A substitute paraeducator, bus monitor, office professional & or LPN may work under the direction of a classroom teacher or site administrator for the purpose of providing assistance to students and or staff. Substitutes are responsible to maintain the care, welfare, safety, and security of all students at all times.

Required Attachments

  • Copy of HS Diploma/Transcripts OR GED Diploma/Transcripts
  • Title I Requirement Documents (Only required for Chehalis, Gravity, Griffin, Olympic Academy, and Tenino School Districts/ESD 113 Programs)

Qualifications

  • Must provide a high school diploma or GED (actual document or transcripts)
  • Must pass a criminal justice fingerprint/background check. The applicant is responsible for the $84 fingerprint/background check fee. Click here to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.

Examples of Paraeducator Duties

  • Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate in person, in writing, or on the phone, with students, staff, parents, and volunteers, in a diverse environment.
  • Assist the teacher in the classroom and/or office staff and follow any written instructions left by the regular employee.
  • Assist individual students in performing activities initiated by the teacher.
  • Supervise children in the hallway, lunchroom, and playground.
  • Assist in monitoring supplementary work and independent study.
  • Reinforce learning in small groups or with individual students while the teacher works with other students.
  • Perform basic clerical tasks (e.g. typing, photocopying, answering phones, assisting parents and staff in the office, etc.)
  • Grade and/or score tests, quizzes, and papers and keep appropriate records for the teacher.
  • Operate and maintain classroom equipment including film projectors, overhead projectors, etc.
  • Comply with all building procedures and schedules. Promote the proper use and care of school property.
  • Work cooperatively with site administration, staff, students, and families.
  • Follow directives of site administration, including but not limited to substituting in another classroom, and/or performing tasks and other related duties as assigned.
  • You are required to remain for the duration of the placement. Do not leave school early.
  • Write a summary for the regular employee describing the day's events.
  • Report any accidents, spills or repairs to the classroom teacher or site administrator.
  • Ability to work under pressure, adjust to varied situations, demands, and new issues.
  • Check out with the front office. Return any keys and/or materials.

Examples of Bus Monitor Duties

  • Assist bus driver in maintaining order and minimizing disruptive activity on the school bus.
  • Assess special education students for the purpose of providing health care and other special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from busses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
  • Clean assigned vehicles, both interior and exterior, for the purpose of maintaining appearance, sanitation and safety of vehicle.
  • Instruct special education students for the purpose of enforcing rules and regulations and maintaining safety.
  • Prepare documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.

Examples of Office Professional Duties

  • Communicates in a positive and effective manner with staff, students, co-workers, parents/guardians, and or visitors either in-person, phone or email.
  • Perform experience-level office/secretarial tasks of a confidential nature including, but not limited to, producing letters via the computer; photocopying, filing, and distributing mail.
  • Answers telephone communications and records messages.
  • Accurately maintain necessary files.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.

    Hood Canal SD $19.46 Paraeducator; $19.36 Office Assistant

    Olympia SD $18.28 Paraeducator; $19.83 Secretary

    Olympic Academy $19.21 Paraeducator

    Tenino SD $16.25 Paraeducator

    Tumwater SD $18.28 Paraeducator; $19.83 Office Professional 6; $23.75 Office Professional 3

    Note: Pay rates are subject to change.

Benefits

  • Sick Leave - Substitutes earn one (1) hour of sick leave for every Forty (40) hours worked in each district.
  • Medical - Substitutes that work 630 or more hours for one district in a school year may earn medical benefits. Substitutes may need to pay a premium for their medical benefits.

Substitute placement is on an on-call, as-needed basis as dictated by the daily needs of our member districts. Be advised, there is no guarantee of placement on any given day and no ongoing expectation of placement.
