Base Salary + Enrichment: $63,660-$120,941
3 Additional Professional Development Days (per diem rate): $1,005 - $1,910

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of this position is to support our district's special education program, which provides services to students with a variety of disabilities ranging from mild to moderate developmental disabilities to severe and profound in the areas of speech, motor, social, behavioral, academic, and cognitive skills. This program may offer instruction focusing on modified curriculum, which may include a combination of the following: functional academics, daily living, prevocational/vocational, behavior and social skills, independent living skills, community access, and vocational skills. Responsibilities vary with the individual assignment, but typically include instruction of students, monitor student behavior, student hygiene, classroom housekeeping, and preparation of materials, testing, and data collection /reporting.

Under the direction of the Building Principal and Director of Special Education, the Licensed Special Education Teacher develops and provides specialized instruction to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities; Evaluates and assesses student progress against instructional objectives; follows State mandated due process procedures and functions as IEP Manager to assigned students. Teachers are responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures, which govern their work, and for acquiring and applying knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 requirements.

Essential Functions: (depending on specific assignment, duties and responsibilities listed may include, but are not limited to the following):

Provides research-based specialized instruction to address the instructional goals and objectives contained within each student's IEP.
Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques.
Employs various teaching techniques, methods and principles of learning to enable students to meet their IEP goals.
Develops and implements annual Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans, FBA/BIPs for students to include: present levels of educational performance, special education needs, instructional goals and objectives, and the special education and related services required to meet those goals.
Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's IEP.
Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers, etc.) regarding the needs of students. Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate sources including technology.
Serves as primary contact for the parent.
Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations.
Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities by communicating expectations of appropriate behavior. Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of paraeducators as directed.
Complies with School Board policies and all state/federal rules and regulations.
Completes all district and state reporting requirements.
Takes action, or assist in taking action, to restrain students who are at risk of harming themselves or others by following school/district approved restraint procedures.
Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities.
Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students.
Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptations, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned.

Employment contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol, FBI fingerprint criminal history background check, and Sexual Misconduct background check.

Education/Experience:
- Minimum B.A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited institution in the appropriate special education area.
- Valid Washington teaching certificate with proper endorsement
- Job related experience

Required Licenses/Certificates:
- Valid Health Card
- Valid Driver's License

Knowledge and Skills:

- Required to be certified or to become certified in first aid, CPR, and/or operation of defibrillators.
- Required to be restraint/de-escalation certified.
- May be required to be trained in instructional methodologies in such content areas as reading, writing, and mathematics, and in such special education areas as student restraint, safely, medication, etc.
- Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.
- Able to work in an environment with frequent interruptions and changing tasks and priorities.
- Able to remain calm, focused and in control when working with students, parents, guardians, and community members who may be difficult and challenging to engage.
- Able to follow written and verbal direction and take the initiative to seek clarity and take action when needed.
- Be or become knowledgeable and supportive of classroom management and student discipline procedures.
- Constantly exhibit command and proper annunciation, spelling, syntax and use of the English language to assist and model proper language usage by students.
- Able to protect the confidentiality of student information consistent with FERPA requirements and good judgment.
- Able to work collaboratively and effectively with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and community members.
- Skills in the use of office and computer equipment and use standard office software and student information system software.

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands:
- Usual office working conditions with exposure to numerous distractions and interruptions. Flow of work and character of duties involve normal mental and visual attention much or all of the time. Requires concentration and attention to detail for repetitive tasks; may deal with distraught or difficult individuals.

Physical Demands:
- Exposed to visual display terminal for prolonged periods; required to sit for prolonged periods; requires sitting, standing, bending, and reaching; dexterity and precision required in the operation of a computer. May require carrying up to 50 pounds or lifting up to 20 pounds overhead.
