This posting is for a 1.0 FTE Band Director / Music Teacher at Chehalis Middle School for the 2025-26 School Year.

Job Goal:

To provide students with activities and instruction which develop awareness of a variety of musical forums and maximizes personal musical skill development. To prepare students for appropriate assessments while encouraging district and state goals related to reading, writing, math, communication, and performance.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide high-quality music instruction to middle school students in concert band, beginning band, small ensembles and other assignments, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the high school music department to ensure vertical alignment and support transitions to the W.F. West High School music program. Work with the elementary music team to develop and grow music instruction and opportunities. 
  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs. 
  • Select appropriate repertoire and develop lesson plans that align with the Washington State Arts Learning Standards through multiple strategies for instruction.
  • Plan, prepare, and conduct performances for concerts, assemblies, festivals, community events, and musical field trips collaboratively with school administration.
  • Support and lead musical enrichment opportunities for middle school students.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and inventory of instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain musical instruments, equipment, and program supplies.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain appropriate classroom management strategies in order to ensure a safe and productive learning environment. 
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Collaborate and value the contribution and partnership of the Chehalis School District Music Boosters.
  • Effectively use multiple means of communication: face-to-face, email, phone, Parent Square.
  • Organize and supervise student participation in extracurricular music activities, including rehearsals, trips, and competitions.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive classroom culture that supports diverse learners.
  • Evaluate each pupil’s growth in knowledge and skills in course(s) taught.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress, and attend IEP’s and 504 meetings for students.
  • Assist in articulation and evaluation of the total music program.
  • Participate in district and building professional development and collaborate with staff to support school goals and district initiatives.
  • Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in writing and oral communication skills.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without accommodations.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
  • Proper endorsement(s) in assigned areas, Highly Qualified in Fine Arts/Music.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in implementing a prescribed curriculum.
  • Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate appropriate technology into the class curriculum.
  • Strong skills and background in instructional methods and strategies, including extensive training in Instrumental Music.
  • Proficiency in reading musical scores and ability to direct and conduct various Bands at various ages and abilities, particularly at grades 6-8.
  • Instrumental proficiency and knowledge of all wind and percussion instruments.
  • Piano keyboard competency preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
-Skills to promote learning of Fine Arts (specifically music) related subject matter, motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, evaluate and assist students in improving their performance skills.
-Knowledge of curriculum, education code, district policies.
-Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities include, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision and may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs.

Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate, appropriate Music Endorsement; Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.

Compensation and Benefits:
Employee Compensation and Benefits are outlined in the CEA Bargaining Agreement. See Article XIII Economic Provisions, Article VII Leaves, Appendix O. 2024-25 school year rates listed. 2025-26 school year rates TBD.

The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) and DRS (Washington State Department of Retirement Systems) eligibility and benefits. To be eligible, a person must work 630 hours in the school year. If eligible, SEBB benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, AD&D Insurance, Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSA), and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). Retirement benefits, if eligible, may include membership in TRS retirement plans in addition to voluntary Deferred Compensation Program and 403(b) Annuity enrollments. Paid time off is also outlined in the CEA Bargaining Agreement.
