Position Summary:
The job of the Secondary Teacher is to create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom; to motivate students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation of secondary grade education, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to supervise students within the classroom, and school environment; to provide a safe environment for learning; to establish good relationships with other staff members. Will work with incarcerated youth.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Center instruction on high expectations for student achievement.
- Provide clear and intentional focus on subject matter content and curriculum.
- Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs.
- Assumes responsibility for implementing and teaching a specialized program in subject area.
- Teaches courses in subject area to secondary pupils utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Directors and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
- Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Use multiple student data elements to modify instruction and improve student learning.
- Establish rapport, communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community.
- Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids.
- Demonstrates subject area concepts using models, visual aids, overhead projector, technological hard and software, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Designs learning activities that will relate subject area to the world.
- Establish and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluates each pupil’s progress in subject area knowledge and skills.
- Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
- Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.
- Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects are being worked on simultaneously.
- Selects and requisitions books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies; maintains required inventory records.
- Communicates with school counselors to discuss the individual pupil’s progress.
- Identifies pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete work at assigned workstation(s).
- Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/background clearance
- Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, demonstrate activities
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers and computer applications; ability to integrate technology with other forms of classroom instruction
- Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills
- Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity is preferred
- Ability to work with incarcerated youth.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum, benchmarks and framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects
- Willingness to supervise/direct extracurricular activities
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff
- Skills to promote learning, motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, and evaluate performance.
- Knowledge of curriculum, education code, and district policies.
- Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.

Compensation and Benefits:
Employee Compensation and Benefits are outlined in the CEA Bargaining Agreement. See Article XIII Economic Provisions, Article VII Leaves, Appendix O. This position will have the option to work an additional 40 days in the summer.
The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) and DRS (Washington State Department of Retirement Systems) eligibility and benefits. To be eligible for SEBB benefits, a person must work 630 hours in a school year. If eligible, SEBB benefits include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, long-term disability, AD&D Insurance, Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSA), and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). Retirement benefits, if eligible, may include membership in TRS retirement plans in addition to voluntary Deferred Compensation Program and 403(b) Annuity enrollments. Paid time off is also outlined in the CEA Bargaining Agreement.
