This posting is for a Substitute Teacher at Green Hill Academic School (GHAS) for the 2024-25 school year. This position is on-call as needed and will work with incarcerated youth.
Position Summary:
The job of the Substitute Teacher is to create a flexible instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom; to motivate students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation of secondary grade education, in accordance with each pupil's ability; to supervise students within the classroom, and school environment; to provide a safe environment for learning; to establish good relationships with other staff members. This position will work with incarcerated youth.
Substitute placement is on-call, as needed as dictated by the daily needs of the school district.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Teach courses in subject area to secondary pupils utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Directors and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
- Establish rapport, communicate and collaborate with parents and the school community.
- Implement the teacher’s written lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids.
- Demonstrate subject area concepts using models, visual aids, overhead projector, technological hard and software, and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluate each pupil’s progress in subject area knowledge and skills.
- Exhibit collaborative and collegial practices focused on improving instructional practice and student learning.
- Foster and manage a safe, positive learning environment.
- Communicate with school counselors to discuss the individual pupil’s progress.
- Identify pupil needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Complete work at assigned workstation(s).
- Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsement
- Valid Substitute Teacher Certificate
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/background clearance
- Skills to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance, demonstrate activities
- Demonstrated knowledge of computers and computer applications; ability to integrate technology with other forms of classroom instruction
- Demonstrated evidence of classroom management skills
- Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity is preferred
- Ability to work with incarcerated youth.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:
- Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum, benchmarks and framework, education code, appropriate instructional subjects
- Willingness to supervise/direct extracurricular activities
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to work cooperatively with administration and staff
- Skills to promote learning, motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, and evaluate performance.
- Knowledge of curriculum, education code, and district policies.
- Abilities to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, other school personnel, meet schedule and deadlines. Significant physical abilities may include lifting/carrying 25 lbs, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/field of vision.

Compensation and Benefits:
Employee Compensation and Benefits are outlined in the CEA Bargaining Agreement. See Section 1.2 Substitutes.
The Substitute Teacher rate of pay for the 2024-25 school year is $160 for Full Day and $95 for Half Day. After 20 consecutive days or 30 non-consecutive days, the rate of pay increases based upon education level. For Bachelor’s Degree, the rate of pay increases to $345.09 for Full Day and $172.54 for Half Day after 20 consecutive days or 30 non-consecutive days. For Master’s Degree, the rate of pay increases to $413.74 for Full Day and $206.87 for Half Day after 20 consecutive days or 30 non-consecutive days. An official transcript must be submitted to the District for verification of a Master’s Degree.
The District complies with State Law regarding SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) and DRS (Washington State Department of Retirement Systems) eligibility and benefits. A substitute that works 630 hours or more in a school year for one district may be eligible for SEBB benefits. If eligible, SEBB benefits include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, long-term disability, AD&D Insurance, Flexible Spending Arrangements (FSA), and Dependent Care Assistance Program (DCAP). Retirement benefits, if eligible, may include membership in TRS retirement plans. Substitutes also earn 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
