The job of the Food Service Helper is to serve the students attractive and nutritious meals in an atmosphere of efficiency, cleanliness and warmth. Substitute placement is on-call, as needed. 

Required Attachments:

  • Copy of HS Diploma/Transcripts OR GED Diploma/Transcripts
  • Copy of valid Washington State Food Worker card

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Demonstrated aptitude for successful performance of tasks listed
  • Must have a valid Washington State Food Worker card
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to remain standing during entire shift
  • Ability to manually move, shelve, stack, or raise from floor to table or serving area heavy objects (pots, pans, trays, and food supplies) weighing up to 35 pounds
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
  • Prior job related experience paid or volunteer

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Maintains the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in the kitchen
  • Maintains all food handling and storage in compliance with state health department guidelines
  • Prepares food according to a planned menu and determines if the finished product is of best quality, both in flavor and appearance before it is served
  • Serves breakfast and/or lunches to students or sells ala carte items
  • Cleans cafeteria area, including the sanitation and wiping down of tables prior to storage
  • Assists Lead Kitchen Helper as requested
  • Reports immediately to the food service supervisors any problems or accidents occurring in the kitchen or on the cafeteria premises
  • Reports to the food service supervisors any faulty or inferior quality food that is received
  • Assist Lead Kitchen Helper in placing orders with the Food Service Supervisor for products needed to prepare for specific job functions
  • Performs the daily cleaning of all kitchen equipment, the washing and sterilizing of all dishes, silverware, and utensils
  • Is responsible for taking cash, lunch cards, or entering student meal account pin numbers into point of sale system
  • Collects and verifies all moneys taken in during the day, fills out deposit, and locks money into bank bag to be picked up by courier
  • Validates that each meal claimed for reimbursement qualifies as a reimbursable meal
  • Is responsible for daily meal and cash report necessary for state reimbursement
  • Performs other food service related duties as assigned pursuant to the contract
  • Performs the essential of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Completes work at assigned workstation(s)
  • Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to perform basic tasks as listed, perform basic arithmetic calculations, operate standard kitchen equipment, use English in verbal and written form to communicate effectively, problem solve.

Abilities to stand for prolonged periods of time, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, meet schedules and deadlines, read/interpret/apply rules, regulations, policies, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of situations; significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity and may include lifting/carrying 35 lbs.

Hourly Substitute Pay Rate:  $18.19 per hour

Benefits

  • Sick Leave - Substitutes earn one (1) hour of sick leave for every Forty (40) hours worked in each district.
  • Medical - Substitutes that work 630 or more hours for one district in a school year may earn medical benefits. Substitutes may need to pay a premium for their medical benefits.

Substitute placement is on an on-call, as-needed basis as dictated by the daily needs of our member districts. Be advised, there is no guarantee of placement on any given day and no ongoing expectation of placement.
