Hours:                8 hours a day 5 days a week


FUNCTION

  • The function of the plumber is to assume primary responsibility for the safe condition of pipes, drains, and plumbing fixtures in the facilities owned or operated by the Scranton School District.


SCOPE

  • The plumber reports directly to the Supervisor of Maintenance and the Director of Faculties and Grounds and works in close cooperation with school district administrative personnel.  Under independent supervision, assembles, installs and repairs according to specifications and plumbing codes, pipes, fittings and fixtures of; gas, water and room heating, water delivery and drainage systems.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures (i.e., water heaters, showers, hot water tanks, disposal units, dishwashers, water softeners, and garbage can washers, water supply, sanitary and boiler systems, etc.).
  2. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers, mending burst pipes and opening clogged drains.
  3. Repairs and/or replaces tubing, gas heating fixtures, furnaces, regulators, controls, pumps, etc.
  4. Studies building plans and drawings to determine materials requirement and sequence of installations.
  5. Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.
  6. Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connection passages holes for pipes in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
  7. Cuts and threads pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch and/or pipe threading machine; Solders, brazes and glues pipe, pipe fittings and related materials.
  8. Tests assembled vessels and piping using specific procedures.
  9. Replaces and/or repairs insulating material on piping.
  10. Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals (i.e., iron, steel, brass, copper, etc.) and nonmetals (i.e., glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools and power tools).
  11. Communicates and assists with other county, city, and state agencies regarding inspection and compliance issues.
  12. Instructs and/or directs the daily activities of skilled trades assistants when assigned.
  13. Responsible for the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  14. Conforms to safety standards as prescribed.
  15. Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.
  16. Aides custodians and maintenance workers in proper methods  of procedure and proper use of tools in plumbing repair work.
  17. Recommends supplies and equipment for purchases, and maintains the inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and supplies.
  18. Estimates costs of plumbing repair projects in terms of labor, material and. overhead.
  19. Examines district owned facilities on a regular basis for purposes of preventive maintenance.
  20. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Maintenance and the Director of Facilities and Grounds.
  21. Reports to Stadium for daily assignments and duties.  


REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be properly licensed under local and state regulations where they exist.  
  2. Possession of a Valid Pennsylvania Drivers license.
  3. Ability to operate the Districts Motor Vehicles.
  4. Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. 
  5. Knowledge of plumbing practices and codes.
  6. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and plans.
  7. Ability to recognize, understand and interpret all local, state, federal and national codes; such as IBC, IMC, IPC, NFPA, ASME and ADA;
  8. Ability to troubleshoot plumbing systems;
  9. Ability to learn and apply operating procedures;
  10. Ability to read and interpret written and/or oral instructions;
  11. Ability to meet predetermined deadlines;
  12. Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools;
  13. Ability to plan and organize work;
  14. Ability to perform strenuous, physical work;
  15. Ability to work in confined areas;
  16. Ability to work flexible hour or shifts;
  17. Ability to withstand heights and perform work safely;
  18. Ability to work cooperatively with employees, students, and the public;
  19. Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods.
  20. Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs


TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Plumber Certification/Qualification with any of the following:
    • Vocational Certificate
    • Completion of an Apprenticeship /Journeyman
    • 5 Years experience as a Plumber
    • Additional training may be required


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver’s License. Must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
