Purpose and Scope of Responsibilities

The Penn Manor High School Color Guard Director is responsible for the overall management and artistic direction of the high school color guard program. This includes, but is not limited to, teaching fundamental skills, choreographing routines, managing rehearsals, overseeing equipment, and fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for students. The Director will work in close collaboration with the band director and other relevant school personnel.

Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in color guard instruction, choreography, and performance.
Strong knowledge of color guard techniques and equipment.
Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
Ability to motivate and inspire students.
Experience in overseeing equipment.
Background check clearance as required by the school district.
[Preferred: Experience working with high school students.]
[Preferred: Bachelor's degree in music, education, or a related field.]

Essential Function and Responsibilities

Instruction and Choreography:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum for color guard instruction, encompassing fundamental techniques, equipment skills (flag, rifle, saber), movement, and performance artistry.
- Choreograph and design visually engaging and musically appropriate routines for performances and competitions, in collaboration with the band director if applicable.
- Teach and refine choreography, providing constructive feedback to students to enhance their skills and performance quality.
Rehearsal Management:
- Plan and conduct effective rehearsals that maximize student learning and productivity.
- Maintain a positive and disciplined rehearsal environment that fosters teamwork, respect, and personal growth.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff regarding rehearsal schedules, expectations, and program updates.
Performance and Competition:
- Prepare the color guard for performances at school events, competitions, and other community engagements.
- Oversee the logistics of performances, including transportation, costuming, and equipment.
- Attend and supervise students at all performances and competitions.
Program Administration:
- Maintain an inventory of equipment and uniforms, ensuring proper care and maintenance.
- Recruit and retain color guard members, promoting the program within the school and community.
- Communicate effectively with the band director, school administration, and parents regarding program needs and activities.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Work collaboratively with the band director and other school staff to ensure the success of the marching band program as a whole.
- Maintain open and consistent communication with students, parents, and school administration.
- Attend relevant meetings and professional development opportunities.

Other Duties

Maintain accurate records and documentation.
Stay current with best practices.
Adhere to ethical principles and professional standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and Personal Limitations and Requirements

May be required to travel with the color guard to performances and competitions
Frequent walking and standing.
A temperament appropriate for work as a team member.
Work environment may include both indoor and outdoor settings, potentially with exposure to varying weather conditions
