Job Title: School Volunteer

Reports To: Building Administration


Job Summary

A school volunteer provides essential support to enhance the educational experience for students and staff. Responsibilities include assisting teachers with classroom activities, preparing materials, supervising students during non-instructional times, and supporting extracurricular programs. Volunteers may also help organize school events, provide one-on-one tutoring, and contribute to maintaining a positive and inclusive school environment. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential duties of this position include the following: Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. 

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of all district policy(ies) and procedures.
  2. Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
  3. Assists students with managing behaviors.
  4. Maintains records as requested by the administration.
  5. Exercise good judgment and extreme caution.
  6. Remain calm in an emergency.
  7. Attends meetings, programs, and in-service training as assigned.
  8. Respond to emergencies (injured students, fights, etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  9. Assists in bus loading and unloading.
  10. Assists students with managing behaviors and resolving conflicts.
  11. May be assigned to various assignments and duties as necessary, which may result in daily schedule changes.
  12. Evaluate student injuries, determine the course of action, perform minor first aid, and complete required paperwork in compliance with District policy(ies).
  13. Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards immediately to the supervisor.
  14. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries as they occur.
  15. Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted when performing duties.
  16. Complies with applicable District, state, local, and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  17. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students.
  18. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
  19. Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.


Marginal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reports issues to authorities as necessary, such as animal control, suspicious activity, etc.


Supervisor Responsibilities

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.


Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position.
  • Interpersonal Skills: The ideal candidate works well with others from diverse backgrounds, focusing on solving conflicts and maintaining confidentiality. They excel in listening to others without interrupting, controlling their emotions, and remaining open to others' ideas. Contributing to building a positive team spirit is essential. Additionally, the candidate must demonstrate the ability to successfully work with young children, creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
  • Language Skills: The candidate must be fluent in both verbal and written English, able to effectively present information and respond to questions in one-on-one and small group settings with students and school staff, and able to verbally address common inquiries from students and read and interpret various documents, including safety rules, IEPs, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations. Additionally, the candidate must be capable of writing routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical Skills: The candidate must add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. They should be able to calculate rates, ratios, proportions, and percentages and measure area, circumference, and volume. Additionally, the candidate should be able to apply introductory algebra and geometry concepts.
  • Reasoning Ability: The candidate must use common sense understanding to follow instructions provided in written, oral, schedule, or diagram form. They should also be capable of addressing problems that involve several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Computer Skills: The candidate should have a general knowledge of computer usage, including the ability to use email, the internet, and word processing software. Proficiency with spreadsheets, Google Docs, Microsoft Office, and Skyward is preferred. Additionally, the ability to type accurately and proficiently is required.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate the ability to exercise good judgment and effectively manage tasks in an environment with constant interruptions. This includes the capacity to prioritize tasks, remain organized, and maintain focus while handling multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Adaptability and flexibility are crucial to succeed in this dynamic setting.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly engages in continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand/arm movements. The employee frequently needs to walk, stand, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. Occasionally, the employee is required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must lift and move up to 50 and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The employee may occasionally climb stairs or ladders. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to work both indoors and outdoors.

The work environment includes exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue. The employee may occasionally need to operate a vehicle under inclement weather conditions and interact with unruly individuals. The job also involves working in a standard office setting with typical equipment. The noise level is usually low to moderate but can occasionally be high depending on the student population and activities. Additionally, the employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
