Title: Color Guard/Winter Guard Director
Reports To: Band Director, Athletic Director
Employment Status: Part time
FLSA Status: Exempt
Qualifications:
1. State of Ohio Teaching license/certificate (preferred-not required).
2. Current BCI/FBI, Pupil Activity Permit (PAP) on file. (Including all required certifications to keep PAP valid.)
3. Evidence of good moral character as established in section 3301-20-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code.
4. Ability to maintain confidential information.
5. Demonstrated coaching and administrative capabilities.
6. Coaching experience preferred.
7. Advanced knowledge of Color Guard/Winter Guard with emphasis on fundamentals and design.
8. Advanced knowledge of training and conditioning techniques.
9. Ability to identify participant strengths/deficiencies and provide quality feedback towards individual and team
improvement.
10. Organizational and problem solving skills.
11. Ability to communicate ideas and directives effectively (orally and in writing).
12. Ability to relate with and inspire young guard members
13. Ability to work effectively with all members of the school and extra-curricular community.
14. Willingness to invest the necessary time to develop a successful program.
15. Ability to make minor repairs on equipment.
16. Experience working with a culturally diverse student population preferred.
17. Alternatives to the above qualifications that the Board of Education may find appropriate.
General Description:
Helps to prepare the Color Guard/Winter Guard to artistically and competitively participate as positive
representatives of the Springfield Local Schools community. Assist the Band Director to create and maintain a
culture that is positive, supportive and rooted in the spirit of education.
Essential Functions:
1. Encourage students to participate in the program
2. Equally prioritize the skill and character development of all team members.
3. Assist the Band Director with equipment and fees.
4. Instruct and assist participants in the care and prevention of injuries.
5. Adhere to rules and regulations set by Springfield Board of Education policies and administrative guidelines.
6. Instruct participants in the proper use of the body-building equipment, training, etc. (if applicable).
7. Schedule, plan and conduct all practice sessions in coordination with the Band Director. Also, schedule all
Guard-specific competitions in coordination with the Band Director.
8. Attend all practices, performances, and competitions that involve the Color Guard and Winter Guard.
9. Shall be accountable for participant behavior during practice sessions, meetings, bus trips, and other activities
under the auspices of the program.
10. Enforce training rules working collaboratively with the Athletic Trainer.
11. Collaborate and communicate with feeder programs in coordination with the Band Director.
12. Participate and assist in the Awards Program by distributing awards to participants.
13. Promote all school activities and encourage students to participate in a variety of activities.
14. Seek opportunities to remain current and develop as a Color Guard/Winter Guard Director.
15. Communicate as needed with staff to ensure a team approach to problem solving.
16. Attend Booster Club meetings and work in conjunction with the Band Director and Booster Officers to facilitate the
operation of a successful Booster Club.
17. Helps maintain safety and security in the building.
18. Accesses, responds and communicates using the district issued email account regularly.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens.
2. Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
3. Remains compliant with district policies regarding alcohol and substance use/abuse. (ie: PO 4122.01 and PO
4170)
4. Conducts all work in a safe and responsible manner.
5. Conducts other duties as assigned by the Band Director and/or Athletic Director.
Additional Working Conditions:
1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
2. Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.
3. Occasional interaction among unruly children.
4. Occasional lifting and carrying of 15-30 pounds.
