Title: Winter Guard Director - Middle School

Reports To: Band Director, Athletic Director

Employment Status: Part time

FLSA Status: Exempt

Qualifications:

1. State of Ohio Teaching license/certificate (preferred-not required).

2. Current BCI/FBI, Pupil Activity Permit (PAP) on file. (Including all required certifications to keep PAP valid.)

3. Evidence of good moral character as established in section 3301-20-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code.

4. Ability to maintain confidential information.

5. Demonstrated coaching and administrative capabilities.

6. Coaching experience preferred.

7. Advanced knowledge of Winter Guard with emphasis on fundamentals and design.

8. Advanced knowledge of training and conditioning techniques.

9. Ability to identify participant strengths/deficiencies and provide quality feedback towards individual and team

improvement.

10. Organizational and problem solving skills.

11. Ability to communicate ideas and directives effectively (orally and in writing).

12. Ability to relate with and inspire young guard members

13. Ability to work effectively with all members of the school and extra-curricular community.

14. Willingness to invest the necessary time to develop a successful program.

15. Ability to make minor repairs on equipment.

16. Experience working with a culturally diverse student population preferred.

17. Alternatives to the above qualifications that the Board of Education may find appropriate.

General Description:

Helps to prepare the Winter Guard to artistically and competitively participate as positive representatives of the

Springfield Local Schools community. Assist the Band Director to create and maintain a culture that is positive,

supportive and rooted in the spirit of education.

Essential Functions:

1. Encourages students to participate in the program

2. Equally prioritizes the skill and character development of all team members.

3. Assists the Band Director with equipment and fees.

4. Instructs and assists participants in the care and prevention of injuries.

5. Adheres to rules and regulations set by Springfield Board of Education policies and administrative guidelines.

6. Schedules, plans and conducts all practice sessions in coordination with the Band Director. Also, schedules all

Guard-specific competitions in coordination with the Band Director.

7. Attends all practices, performances, and competitions that involve the Winter Guard.

8. Shall be accountable for participant behavior during practice sessions, meetings, locker room activities, bus trips,

and other activities under the auspices of the program including maintaining supervision of all participants until

they have been picked up by parents/guardians.

9. Participates and assists in the Awards Program by distributing awards to participants.

10. Organizes fund-raising events.

11. Completes all reports concerning class activities and fund-raising.

12. Complies with all fund-raising and spending policies and procedures.

13. Promotes all school activities and encourages students to participate in a variety of activities.

14. Seeks opportunities to remain current and develop as a Winter Guard Director.

15. Communicates as needed with staff to ensure a team approach to problem solving.

16. Attends Booster Club meetings and work in conjunction with the Band Director and Booster Officers to facilitate

the operation of a successful Booster Club.

17. Helps maintain safety and security in the building.

18. Accesses, responds and communicates using the district issued email account regularly.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as responsible citizens.

2. Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

3. Remains compliant with district policies regarding alcohol and substance use/abuse. (ie: PO 4122.01 and PO

4170)

4. Conducts all work in a safe and responsible manner.

5. Conducts other duties as assigned by the Band Director and/or Athletic Director.

Additional Working Conditions:

1. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.

2. Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.

3. Occasional interaction among unruly children.

4. Occasional lifting and carrying of 15-30 pounds.
