POSITION TITLE: VARSITY ASSISTANT SOFTBALL COACH

REPORTS TO: Head Coach and/or Athletic Director
PRIMARY PURPOSE: To give students the opportunity for the maximum development of performance skills, good sportsmanship, fair play and ethical conduct. To conduct a program that recognizes the needs, capacities, and welfare of all participants at their respective age and grade levels.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
- Policies, regulations, and procedures pertaining to the interscholastic sports program;
- Methods, techniques, procedures, and strategies concerning the development and maintenance of an effective interscholastic sports program.
- Principles, goals, and objectives of public education.
Ability To:
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Provide specialized resource support and coordination of a creative and innovative interscholastic sports program.
- Analyze and assess interscholastic sports program needs, and offer recommendations pertaining to program activity revisions, additions, or deletions.
- Establish and maintain organization, community, and public relationships.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Organize, coordinate, and participate in the school site interscholastic sports program.
- Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.
- Maintain a consistent, positive, disciplined, and competitive program that will service all students.
- Travels with students and supervises the team during athletic competitions in assigned sports. Must accompany the team to the game and home from the game on the player/coach bus; unless other arrangements have been approved by the Athletic Director or Building Principal.
- Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible in all phases of the athletic program.
- Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to the conditioning of players and training rules affecting the health and safety of the players.
- Comply with policies and rules established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, School District, and IHSSAA.
- Works closely with the Head Coach to provide continuity and smooth operation of the program.
- Performs other tasks related to coaching, which may be assigned by the Coach, Athletic Director, or Building Principal.
- Observe sports participants during practice and workout sessions to detect and correct errors in activity procedures and methods.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Assignment for a coaching position is for one school year only.
- Seniority shall not be considered in the selection of a head coach or assistant coach unless skill and ability are equal in each sport. The most able, trained, and skilled shall be the head coach and others assigned as assistant coaches in each sport.
- No coach shall allow a student to participate in after-school activities while the same interferes with a student’s academic work, nor while suspended from school or activities for disciplinary reasons.
