General Description:
Performs any combination of following instructional tasks in the In-School Suspension Room by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides supervision for students assigned to the In-School Suspension room.
  • Reviews in-school suspension policies, procedures, and student expectations with students daily.
  • Works with students to complete reflection on issues such as behavior management and the prevention of undesirable behaviors that resulted in student’s assignment to ISS.
  • Monitors all ISS assignments, provides encouragement and feedback to students, monitors tests and computer work, and provides instructional assistance as appropriate.
  • Contact teachers for work requests as needed.
  • Supervises lunchtime in ISS room, including taking students down to the lunchroom to get their lunches
  • Refer behavior problems to the school administrator.
  • Performs related work as required or assigned.
  • Push into the resource room when the ISS room is empty.

Complete at least two years of study at an institution of high education (equal to 60 semester hours) or: 

Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through a passage of an approved formal state academic assessment in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instruction of reading, writing and mathematics; or
  2. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.

The State Board of Education approved the following formal assessments by which a paraprofessional may choose to demonstrate this knowledge:

  1.  Basic Skill Examination 
  2. A passing score on the MTTC Basic Skills Test
  3. A passing score of at least 480 on evidence based reading and writing section of the SAT and 530 on the mathematics section in lieu of the Basic Skills Examination of the Professional Readiness Exam
  4. A passing score of on the ETS Para Assessment (460 is required).

Proficiency in all language arts skills area.  Ability to work well with students, the public and other employees


Restorative Justice: (Willing to train the right individual for the assignment)

  • Ability to analyze a conflict, identify root causes and assist parties in finding a mutually agreed upon resolution

  • provide training and outreach programs on conflict resolution, de-escalation strategies, and mediation skills to promote constructive communication and problem-solving for students and staff
  • Implement an on-going assessment model to produce information on student conduct
  • Identify behavioral trends
  • Use of data for purposes of planning and proactive/preventative and education
  • Understanding concepts of multiculturalism, diversity, power/privilege and how these impact the perception and resolution of conflict.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and/or experience in Restorative Justice/Practice
  • Experience with alternative dispute resolution programs
  • Experience promoting cultural awareness and social justice
  • Self-Motivated, independent worker
  • Effective Team member
  • Produce will-written resolution agreements for parties involved in a dispute
  • Participation in organizational diversity and equity initiatives

Reports to:  Building Principal 

Salary:  Salary is in accordance with the New Haven Schools Para-professional Association/MEA and the New Have Board of Education 

Candidate must pass background check. 

Position is open currently for the 2024-2025 school year, covering a one year leave of absence.
