Godwin Heights Public Schools is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Boys Varsity Basketball Coach to lead the high school program at Godwin Heights High School. As a district committed to equity, excellence, and opportunity, we are looking for a coach who will be a positive role model, build meaningful relationships with our diverse student population, and cultivate a culture of teamwork, discipline, and respect. The ideal candidate will be committed to supporting student-athletes both on and off the court, helping them grow as players, students, and community members.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead all aspects of the varsity basketball program, including planning practices, managing game strategies, and overseeing off-season training.
Develop and implement effective training and conditioning programs to enhance athletic performance.
Promote a positive, inclusive, and competitive team culture focused on respect, accountability, and sportsmanship.
Develop strong relationships with student-athletes, promoting inclusivity and belonging in a diverse, urban school environment.
Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and techniques of basketball.
Monitor academic progress and support student-athletes in balancing sports with educational responsibilities.
Mentor assistant coaches and guide feeder programs and youth development.
Collaborate with assistant coaches, teachers, administrators, and families to support student-athlete success.
Ensure compliance with school, district, and MHSAA policies and regulations.
Consistent involvement with all lower-level programs
Maintains the equipment and storage in an orderly fashion and assumes responsibility for its security.
Distributes equipment, supplies, and uniforms to students.
Submits a list of award winners to the athletic director at the end of the season.
Participates in special activities: parents' night, banquets, award nights, pep assemblies, parades, and community events.
Maintains and distributes up-to-date rosters, eligibility information, emergency data, and other related records.

Qualifications:

Proven experience coaching basketball at the high school, college, or elite youth level; head coaching experience preferred.
Thorough knowledge of basketball rules, techniques, and best practices.
Valid CPR/First Aid certification and MHSAA coaching credentials (or willingness to obtain).
Bachelor’s degree preferred; teaching certification a plus.
Ability to pass a background check and meet all district employment requirements.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust/focus.

Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate. Work is performed indoors, although there may be required outdoor activities. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being, and work output of students.
