QUALIFICATIONS:

 

SUMMARY: Directs and coordinates special education programs and services for the North Service Unit. Formulates policies and procedures for new or revised programs/activities, such as screening, placement, education, and training of staff. Evaluates special education programs to ensure that objectives for special education are met. Interprets laws, rules, and regulations to parents and staff. Recruits, selects, and evaluates staff. Prepares reports for Federal, state and local regulatory agencies.

 

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Provide leadership in the development, coordination and evaluation of special education programs, services, and staff.

·         Work to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

·         Meet with parents to discuss questions, concerns, or complaints, and confer with staff on needs of students.

·         Responsible for all Individualized Educational Program Team meetings.

·         Develop and administer policies and procedures affecting programs and services.

·         Maintain appropriate student records and appropriate reports.

·         Serve on various district and/or community committees.

·         Hire, train, and supervise ancillary staff.

·         Track, monitor, and assist in correction of monitoring issues.

·         Assist administration in evaluating, hiring, and training of special education teachers/itinerant staff.

·         Promote best research-based practices in the NSU.

·         Support district programming of intervention models.

·         Work cooperatively with Michigan Department of Education to resolve issues and ensure compliance with Federal and State regulations relating to

Special Education.

·         All other duties as assigned by the NSU Superintendents.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

·           Masters Degree or higher

·           Administrative experience preferred

·           Holds a Special Education Director approval from the State of Michigan, or

·           Valid teaching certificate with an endorsement in one area of special education, and qualifies for district initiated temporary State of Michigan

approval which includes,

- Full approval or endorsement in at least one area of special education,

-Three years of successful professional practice or administrative experience in special education, or combination of practice and experience.

-Verification from a Michigan University/College enrolled in special education director program
