POSITION: Full-time counselor

REQUIREMENTS: Must possess either a valid School Guidance Counselor License (SCL), one of the following endorsements: Michigan Teaching Certificate with School Counselor (NT), Preliminary School Counselor License (PSCL), or Temporary School Counselor License (TSCL), or a Secondary Teaching License with the willingness to pursue one of the listed certifications above, and meet Federal Highly Qualified Teacher requirements. Spanish language skills are an asset.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.

RELATED SERVICES

Helping students with course selection, academic planning, and setting goals.
Plan and organize senior mentoring programs and senior mock interviews.
Support work with FASFA completion and EDPs
Addressing student concerns related to emotional, social, and behavioral challenges, and providing support for mental health and well-being.
Assisting students in exploring career options, developing job search skills, and preparing for post-secondary education.
Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information
Advocate for student rights and needs within the school system.

SERVICES TO PARENTS/FAMILIES

Work with families of struggling students to make plans for their educational progress.
Support the social-emotional health of students and families.
Help connect families to community services.
Develop EDP (educational development plans) plans and ensure they are updated regularly.

SERVICES TO SCHOOL PERSONNEL

Providing staff with essential information to better understand factors (cultural, societal, economic, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior
Assisting teachers with behavior management.
Support academics by monitoring and informing staff on student progress. Sharing data from standardized tests, failures, attendance, behavior, etc.
Help students select and schedule courses in PowerSchool.
Help coordinate state testing.

SCHOOL-COMMUNITY LIAISON

Obtaining and coordinating community resources to meet students' needs.
Helping school districts receive adequate support from social and mental health agencies.
Advocating for new and improved community/school services to meet the needs of students and families.
Helping the system respond effectively to each child's needs.

SERVICES TO DISTRICTS

Assist in developing and implementing individual student academic program planning.
Developing alternative programs for dropouts, truants, delinquents, etc.
Identifying and reporting child abuse and neglect.
Providing case management for students and families requiring multiple resources.
Crisis response support.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

May oversee: Educational Assistants, Student Teachers, Volunteers, or Student Workers

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor Degree.

Valid Michigan school guidance counselor license. Spanish language skills an asset.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of parents or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
