Position: Director of Special Education & Student Support Services
Weeks of Work:  Year-Round Position
Status: Full time, 40 hours/week
Salary:  Commensurate with experience
 
JOB GOAL:  Under the general supervision of the Superintendent, this position directs and manages the Special Education and Student Support programs including student support specialists and associated itinerant staff and manages related established budget areas. Implements policies and procedures of the school district and recommends changes to the same. Assists the individual schools in carrying out their responsibilities for the delivery of special education programs and student support services, as required by state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
An individual shall possess, upon application, the following minimal experience or its satisfactory equivalent:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or equivalent.
  • Valid Michigan Teacher Certificate with Special Education endorsement, full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • Three years successful professional practices or administrative experience in Special Education, or combination thereof – preferred.
  • Qualifications for Michigan Administrative Certification and approval as a Director of Special Education.
  • LMSW certification – preferred.

 
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Special Education Department in conjunction with the building principals.
  • Coordinate with district level administrators and building principals, special education department chairs, ERESA staff, district special education staff, nursing services, and student support specialists.
  • Oversee the placement of all students requiring special education services within the District.
  • Assist the individual schools to carry out their responsibilities for the delivery of special education programs and student support services, as required by state and federal laws and District administrative rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate and supervise services provided by the ERESA, other school districts, and agencies that provide support services for students residing in the District.
  • Develop and maintain special education financial and programmatic functions in accordance with state and federal laws as well as local policy.
  • Function as a member of the District administrative team.
  • Provide support in the hiring, training, assigning, evaluating, and disciplining of Special Education & Student Support Department employees.
  • Facilitate professional development for special education and general education staff as appropriate, especially in the area of best practices in special education.
  • Provide leadership to ensure that special education programs and student support services are integrated into the instructional program.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the student support specialists throughout the District to ensure best practices are shared between buildings, and programs and services are fully integrated into the social and emotional components of learning.
  • Carry out and implement policies of the Charlotte Public Schools Board of Education as directed by the Superintendent.
  • Work effectively with the Board, faculty, support staff and all segments of the community in order to achieve the stated goals and objectives of the district.
  • Complete and submit required local, state, and federal reports in accordance with established deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community and provide leadership to resolve conflicts when necessary.
  • Oversee student services associated with identification and support for homeless students within the district.
  • Oversee student services associated with the identification and support for homebound and homebased students within the district.
  • Leverage research and data to drive initiatives and instruction.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
