General Summary
In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Teacher Consultant is responsible for supporting both general education and special education staff in meeting the diverse needs of students. This role plays a key part in fostering inclusive practices and ensuring appropriate supports are in place for student success.
About the Role
Provides consultative support to general education and special education teachers to enhance instructional strategies and accommodations. Collaborates with general education teachers to assess the educational needs of students suspected of having a disability and recommends interventions prior to formal classification. Serves as a member of multidisciplinary evaluation teams and act as case coordinator for assigned students, ensuring seamless communication and support. Administers educational assessments to identify student strengths and areas of need. Supports the coordination of services for students with disabilities, including connections to vocational education, rehabilitation services, and community agencies to address career readiness, life skills, and transition planning. Delivers professional development and in-service training to educators, administrators, parents, and program staff. Provides direct services to students who can succeed in a general education setting with appropriate support. Participates actively in Individualized Education Program Team (IEPT) meetings and contribute to diagnostic evaluations. Builds positive relationships with students, promoting respect, acceptance, and inclusivity within the school community. Demonstrates professionalism through active involvement in school initiatives, curriculum development, and committee participation, while serving as a role model for students. Communicates clearly and effectively—both orally and in writing—with diverse audiences, including colleagues, families, and external agencies. Fulfills all professional responsibilities and administrative duties required of a certified staff member.
Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
Full certification by the State Board of Education in teaching special education A master’s degree in education or a field of study related to special education A minimum of three yeas of satisfactory full-time teaching experience or its equivalent with at least one year full-time experience teaching children with emotional impairments or learning disabilities Demonstrated competencies in in-servicing adults and in dealing with a large variety of student learning, behavioral and/or physical adaptation problems At least three semester hours in specific testing procedures for students with disabilities Successful completion of a practicum in special education One year of successful teacher consultant experience on a multi-disciplinary team, desired Demonstrated commitment to professional growth Ability and desire to work with a diverse student body with a commitment to providing a positive experience for students and their families regardless of race, culture, creed, religion, handicapping condition, social-economic status, gender or gender identity
