A special education teacher works with students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to support their emotional, social, and academic growth as outlined in their IEP. Special Education teachers will gather performance data to monitor student progress in conjunction with the classroom teacher.
Required Professional Preparation and Experience:
- Hold valid certification to teach special education
- Excellent communication skills
- Willingness to collaborate with others
- Strong sense of empathy
- Drive to help students succeed.
Preferred Professional Preparation and Experience:
- 2-3 years of experience
- Experience using Illuminate Education to write IEPs
Major Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with each general education teacher and other staff by providing direct and/or indirect services to support student progress and needs.
- Communicate with teachers, parents, and support staff about student progress and student meetings.
- Lead meetings with staff and families, as needed, to support student success including, but not limited to, IEP team meetings, REEDS, and manifestations.
- Prepare, plan, and provide flexibility in instructional materials/programs and/or instructional environments that best suit student needs. This may include a resource setting, co-taught setting, or a push-in setting.
- Monitor and document the use of accommodations and classroom achievement.
- Collaborate and align instruction with the special education department.
- Complete all required Medicaid forms (Parent Medicaid Consent, Personal Care Authorization) and keep up to date on Medicaid billing.
- Assist paraprofessionals in ensuring that personal care service logs are completed.
