To provide, as a member of the Counseling Department, a comprehensive guidance program for students in grads 5-8; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and provide support to our middle school educational process.

Job Title: School Counselor Reports to: Middle School Principal

Position Summary

The School Counselor, as a member of the Counseling Department, will deliver a comprehensive guidance program for students in grades 5–8. This role includes providing individual and group counseling, consulting with teachers, staff, and families, and supporting the overall educational experience of middle school students.

Key Responsibilities

● Provide individual and small-group counseling; refer students with more intensive needs to community-based services.

● Promote equitable access to academic, social-emotional, and college/career support services.

● Guide students and families in developing educational and career plans using assessment data and test results.

● Coordinate and administer standardized student assessments.

● Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support staff to meet the needs of students with academic, behavioral, or emotional challenges.

● Facilitate student support groups, particularly for at-risk populations.

● Contribute to the implementation and advancement of the district counseling program.

● Share child development and mental health resources through newsletters, family outreach, and counseling office materials.

● Lead classroom-based counseling activities in partnership with teachers and administrators.

● Assist teachers in integrating counseling concepts into the general education curriculum.

● Participate in school events such as student orientation, parent-teacher conferences, and open houses.

● Manage student enrollment, scheduling, and academic records.

Monitor student progress and recognition programs (e.g., report cards, honor roll, academic letters).

● Provide immediate and ongoing support in crisis situations.

● Actively participate on school committees and teams (e.g., BIT, crisis, SAT, school improvement).

● Collaborate with the principal to develop the school’s master schedule.

● Identify and support students eligible for services under Section 31a and other at-risk designations.

● Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.

Qualifications

● Master’s degree in Counseling or a related field

● Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Counseling Endorsement

● Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other educational software applications

● Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local educational laws, policies, and regulations

● Ability to work collaboratively and maintain strong communication with students, staff, and families

● Other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board of Education
